      USE: Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. It forms a liquid crystal composition by mixing with a liquid crystal compound such as phenylcyclohexane-type liquid crystal, etc. A liquid crystal composition having low working voltage and excellent contrast can be prepared.
      PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be prepared by brominating the acylated 4-acylbiphenyl of formula II, condensing with dimethyl malonate, hydrolyzing and decarbonating the condensation product, esterifying with methanol- sulfuric acid after reduction, carrying out the acetylation and oxidization of the product, cyclizing the product, and carrying out several steps such as reduction, esterification, etc.
