      USE: A component for liquid crystal compositions capable of extending the liquid crystal temperature, reducing the viscosity and improving the operating temperature range and response characteristics of liquid crystal display elements.
      PROCESS: A solution of a compound expressed by formula III in ethanol is prepared, and a small amount of Na [BH
      4 ] is added to the resultant solution under cooling with ice and stirring. Acetic acid is then added thereto to produce a compound expressed by formula IV, which is then reacted with SOCl
      2 to give a compound expressed by formula V. Sodium is dissolved in propyl alcohol, and a solution of the compound expressed by formula V in dimethylformamide is added to the resultant solution and reacted under heating to obtain the compound expressed by formula I , e.g. the compound expressed by formula II.

    • PURPOSE: To provide a guest-host liquid crystal composition having excellent display contrast and stability, by dissolving a polychromatic dye containing a dye having trans-4-substituted-cyclohexyl group as a guest substance in a host liquid crystal constituting the matrix.
      CONSTITUTION: The objective liquid crystal composition can be prepared by dissolving (A) a polychromatic dye containing a dye having preferably ≥70mol% of trans-4-substituted-cyclohexyl group (preferably anthraquinone dye, azo dye, azomethine dye, quinophthalone dye, perynone dye, thioindigo dye, naphthalimide dye or oxazine dye) in (B) a host liquid crystal constituting the matrix.
