    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation and infiltration of the static electricity occurring in packaging of elastic material spacers into liquid crystal display elements and to suppress the dielectric breakdown of the liquid crystal display elements by disposing insulating films on the video signal lines existing in the parts where the elastic material spacers come into contact at the single sheet parts at the ends of the liquid crystal display elements. SOLUTION: Protective films (passivation films) PSV1 are formed on the transparent conductive films d1 of the video signal lines existing on the surface of the transparent insulating substrate in the parts where the rubber cushions GC1 (elastic material spacers) come into contact at the single sheet ends at the ends of the liquid crystal display element, i.e., the substrate ends. The protective films PSV1 are formed simultaneously with the protective films PSV 1 in the display parts and are formed of silicon oxide films and silicon nitride films formed by, for example, a plasma CVD apparatus to a film thickness of about 0.6μm. As a result, the direct contact of the rubber cushions GC1 with the transparent conductive films d1 of the video signal lines does not arise any more and, since the insulation resistance by the protective films PSV1 is generated, the dielectric breakdown at the time of packing the rubber cushions is prevented.
