    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an occupant support sometimes providing occupant's skin or other soft tissues with shear. SOLUTION: A bed includes a frame having with at least one orientation adjustable section (44, 46 and 48) and a mattress supported by the frame and having at least one A bladder and at least one B bladder. The bladders are inflatable and deflatable out of phase with each other in coordination with at least one of (a) issuance of a command for the frame section to change orientation and (b) an actual change in orientation of the frame section. There is a method relating to operation of an occupant/support at least part of which is orientation adjustable relative to other parts of the occupant support. The method, according to a change of orientation of the orientation adjustable part, provides a location A with a relatively lower occupant/support interface pressure (OSIP) and a location B with a relatively higher OSIP and followingly provides the location A with a relatively higher OSIP and the location B with a relatively lower OSIP. • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit the weight of fluidizable beds without significantly compromising fluidized support for occupants. SOLUTION: The fluidizable bed includes a fluidizable material 36 within a containment vessel 12 and a filer sheet 24 having a vent region 42 covering a top portion 22 of the vessel. The vent region has a permeability of less than about 65 cubic feet per minute per square foot. The vent region 42 covers a top portion of the vessel and has a permeability sufficient to (1) establish a pressure difference across the filter sheet equal to or greater than a prescribed pressure difference threshold, or (2) support no more than a specified non-negligible portion of an occupant's weight. Also the bed is capable of supporting an occupant weighing more than about 300 pounds and preferably more than about 400 pounds while maintaining the fluidizable material in a fluidized state and (2) a fluidized bed weighing no more than about 950 pounds and (3) a fluidizable bed weighing no more than about four times the weight of an occupant thereof. • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for positioning of an occupant capable of assisting to turn the occupant from, for example, a prone position to a supine position by inflating turn assist bladders to tilt the occupant to the left or right.SOLUTION: A method of positioning the occupant includes identifying a discrepancy between an existing occupant position and a target occupant position, and establishing an elevation gradient having a direction, magnitude and position compatible with moving the occupant from the existing position to the target position. In one variant of the method, a step of establishing an elevation gradient is one substep of a preordained sequence of bladder inflations and deflations. In another variant, the method includes determining if the discrepancy is corrected and responding to any noncorrection of the discrepancy. A controller is capable of receiving information from a sensor array, identifying suboptimal positioning of the occupant, and capable of issuing commands for the pump to inflate selected repositioning bladders, thereby, urging the occupant from his or her target position.
