摘要： Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to compact systems for generating polarization-entangled photons. In one embodiment of the present invention, a non-degenerate, polarization-entangled photon source (800, 1200) comprises a half-wave plate (802, 1202) that outputs both a first pump beam and a second beam and a second pump beam, and a first beam displacer (806, 1204) directs the first pump beam into a first transmission channel (824, 1224) and the second pump beam into a second transmission channel (826, 1226). A down-conversion device (803, 804, 810, 1208, 1210) converts the first pump beam into first ignal and idler photons and converts the second pump beam into second signal and idler photons. A second beam displacer (8089, 1206) directs both the first signal and idler photons and the second signal and idler photons into a single transmission channel. A dichroic mirror (812, 1212) directs the first and second signal photons to a first fiber coupler and the first and second idler photons to a second fiber optic coupler.

摘要： Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods and systems for generating random numbers. In one embodiment, a quantum random number generator (1100, 1200, 1300) comprises: a state generator (1102) configured to generate a quamtum system in a coherent state; a polarization states analyzer (1104) configured to project the quantum system onto one of four different polarization states, and detect each of the four different ploarization states; a raw bit generator (1106) configured to convert the quantum system into a single photon and detect the single photon in either a first polarization state that corresponds to a first binary number or a second polarization state that corresponds to a second binary number; and a system control (1108) configured to receive signals from the polarization states and the raw bit generator, the signals corresponding to the polarization states, and output a random number based on the first and second polarization states of the single photon.

In one embodiment of the present invention, a polarization entangled-photon state source comprises a single transmission layer (912, 1112, 1312, 1500, 1600) configured for transmitting electromagnetic radiation. The transmission layer includes a beamsplitter (902, 1102, 1302) and a down-conversion device (904, 1104), both of which are configured to convert a pump beam into first and second signal beams and first and second idler beams. The transmission layer also includes a mode converter (906, 1106, 1306) configured to invert electric and magnetic field components of both the first signal beam and the first idler beam, and a combiner (908, 1108, 1308) configured to receive the first and second beams and the first and second idler beams and output the first and second signal beams and the first and second idler beams in an entangled polarization states.

In one embodiment of the present invention, an optical-based, self-authenticating quantum random number generator comprises an input state generator (1102, 2102) that generates a optical quantum system in a linear superposition of states, a detector (1112-1115, 2108, 2110) that measures the state of the optical quantum system, a system control (1118, 2114) that evaluates a result obtained from measuring the state of the optical quantum system to determine whether or not to append a number associated with the result to the sequence of random numbers. The quantum random number generator may also include a state controller (1104, 1106, 2104), located between the input generator (1102, 2102) and the detector (1112-1115, 2108, 2110), that is operationally controlled by the system control (1118, 2114) in order to maintain the states of the optical quantum system, based on the results obtained from measuring the states of the optical quantum system.

摘要： Optical devices (100) including waveguide grating structures (102) are described. In accordance with one embodiment, an optical device (100) is provided comprising a horizontal waveguide grating structure (102) having at least one waveguiding layer (104) and at least one subwavelength periodic grating layer (106). The optical device (100) further comprises upper and lower cladding layers (108, 110) immediately adjoining respective upper and lower surfaces (209, 205) of the waveguide grating structure and having refractive indices lower than a lowest-index one of the waveguiding layers, incident radiation propagating (IN) through one of the upper and lower cladding layers (108, 110) toward the waveguide grating structure. The waveguide grating structure (102) is configured for peak reflection of the incident radiation at a peak reflection frequency. A cumulative thickness of the waveguiding layers (104) is less than one tenth of a free space wavelength of the incident radiation at the peak reflection frequency divided by an average refractive index of the waveguiding layers.

In one embodiment of the present invention, an electromagnetic radiation amplification system (900, 1300, 1600) comprises a photonic grating (200-500) and a pump source (902, 1302, 1602). The photonic grating is configured with a planar periodic lattice of holes in a slab (202-402). The pump source is coupled to the photonic grating and outputs an electronic stimulus that excites electronic energy states in the photonic grating so that a coherent beam of electromagnetic radiation incident upon the photonic grating stimulates emission of coherent electromagnetic radiation that amplifies the coherent beam of electromagnetic radiation.
