A web or strip of material is coated while leaving a selected area or areas uncoated by placing a blank or blanks of magnetic material on the selected area or areas, holding the blank or blanks on the material by magnetic force while applying the coating composition to the material and to the blank or blanks, and then removing the blank or blanks by magnetic force. As shown, a web 1 from a roll 2 is led around a roller 3 and over a flat magnetic chuck 4 which serves to hold firmly in position on the web a series of magnetic blanks 6 delivered one at a time from a device 5. Coating composition from a hopper 8 is spread over the web and the blanks by a roller 7 and the blanks are removed by an intermittently magnetised electromagnet 9. The coating, which may be a pressure, sensitive adhesive applied to a semi-permeable film backing, may be dried while the strip passes on an endless belt 12 through a drying tunnel 13 through which warm air is blown. A backing material 17 from roll 19 may be pressed on between driven rollers 16 and the strip severed by a punch 20 into individual dressings each with a central window free of adhesive. The magnetic material may be thin steel plates or sheets of paper or plastic composition impregnated with iron powder.
