    • The potassium salt of naphthalene-2 : 6-dicarboxylic acid is prepared by heating the potassium salt of a naphthalene monocarboxylic acid at a temperature above 360 DEG C. in the presence of an inert medium other than carbon dioxide. The free acid and derivatives thereof may be obtained from the potassium salt in known manner. The reaction conditions are similar to those described in the parent Specification. The inert medium may contain an admixture of carbon dioxide. Specified inert media are carbon monoxide, nitrogen, the rare gases, methane, ethane, butane, hexane, benzene, toluene, xylene and naphthalene. The potassium naphthoate starting material may be admixed with salts of benzoic or phthalic acids. Specified catalysts for the reaction are lead and mercury, or their compounds, and particularly cadmium and zinc, or their oxides or salts. In examples: (1) potassium b -naphthoate was heated in an autoclave in an atmosphere of nitrogen using cadmium fluoride as catalyst, the reaction product was dissolved in hot water, filtered, and naphthlene-2 : 6-dicarboxylic acid precipitated by the addition of hydrochloric acid; (2) as in (1) but using a mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide as inert medium; (3) as in (1) but using potassium a -naphthoate and cadmium oxide as catalyst; (4) as in (1) but using cadmium chloride as catalyst, the inert medium being a mixture of liquid naphthalene, naphthalene vapour and carbon dioxide.
