    • To reduce the surveying error in a wellbore, the creation of several reference points within a borehole is carried out by physically placing borehole markers in the borehole casing, the borehole wall or in the formation itself, and providing an accurate reference of the marker location by either storing information specific to the borehole markers inside or on the marker itself, or assigning an identification number to the marker and storing the information relating to that identification number remotely in a database. The borehole markers may contain an electronic module which includes a microcircuit, a transponder dedicated to the transmission and reception of data to/from a detector placed on a wireline tool, a drill string or a coiled tubing. The detectors may have an additional role of interrogation the electronic modules.

    • In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and an article, may operate to acquire a first signal from a first magnetometer at least partially disposed within a Helmholtz coil, to acquire a second signal from a second magnetometer having a sensitivity at least one thousand times less than the first magnetometer, to process the second signal to determine a drive signal, to drive the Helmholtz coil using the drive signal so as to null an ambient Earth magnetic field surrounding the first magnetometer, and to process the first signal as one of a down hole location signal or a down hole telemetry signal, the location signal to determine a range to a sub-surface object, and the telemetry signal to provide data from down hole drilling operations.     • A signaling apparatus comprises a magnet (12) and a shield (14) moveable relative to the magnet, the shield is moveable relative to the magnet between a first position in which the magnet is relatively exposed and a second position in which the magnet is relatively shielded. The apparatus can include a synchronization signal source, a downhole sensor signal source, and/or means for modulating the magnetic field in response to the signal from any source. A method of using the signaling apparatus to locate a bottomhole assembly (200) includes moving the shield so as to modulate the magnetic fiel created by the magnet, sensing the modulation of the magnetic field, and determining the location of the bottomhole assembly using the information collected. The BHA can be located using phase shift or amplitude measurements. Receivers detecting the modulated magnetic field can be at or below the earth's surface.
