The system uses a mud pump (22) to generate a flow of mud through a drill string (10) which is modulated. The signal processor (28) detects and processes the received mud pulses. The algorithm detects and attemps to correct for at least five possible error mechanisms: the missed detection of a pulse that creates an interval greater than maximum; the missed detection of a pulse that results in an interval still within acceptable boundaries; the detection of an extra pulse; a pulse shift that results in data in contiguous intervals being affected; and a pulse shift resulting in a single interval data corruption.

摘要： A method of testing a downhole formation using a formation tester on a drill string. The formation tester is disposed downhole on a drill string and a formation test is performed by forming a seal between a formation probe assembly and the formation. A drawdown piston then creates a volume within a cylinder to draw formation fluid into the volume through the probe assembly. The pressure of the fluid within the cylinder is monitored. The formation test procedure may then be adjusted. The test procedure may be adjusted to account for the bubble point pressure of the fluid being monitored. The pressure may monitored to verify a proper seal is formed or is being maintained. The test procedure may also be performed by maintaining a substantially constant drawdown rate using a hydraulic threshold or a variable restrictor.

Embodiments of the invention may transmit data gathered by downhole tools to surface devices by inducing pressure pulses into the drilling fluid. The mud pulse communication system gathers data from the devices and transmits the data to the surface by creating mud pulses in the drilling fluid within the drill string. In particular, the methods and related apparatus may send a first datum of a first parameter in an uncompressed form, and send a second datum of the first parameter in compressed form.

摘要： A method of testing a downhole formation uses a formation tester (10, fig 2) on a drill string. The tester is disposed downhole on a drill string and a formation test is performed by forming a seal between a formation probe assembly 50 and the formation 9. A drawdown piston 170 then creates a volume within a chamber (172, fig 3A) to draw formation fluid into the volume through the probe assembly. The position of the piston is monitored during the procedure. The operation of the piston is controlled in order to maintain a constant drawdown rate or steady drawdown pressure. Controller 190 uses the positional information to calculate the drawdown rate of the piston 170. Based on the calculations, the controller determines if adjustments need to be made in the hydraulic system 200 during the drawdown of the piston 170 to maintain a constant drawdown rate. The controller similarly adjusts the drawdown rate or volume to maintain a certain pressure.
