    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of tracks defined by a plurality of servo sectors. An estimated track ID is generated and a plurality of proximate track IDs is generated having values proximate the estimated track ID. A set of Gray codes is generated each corresponding to the estimated track ID and the proximate track IDs, wherein each Gray code in the set of Gray codes comprises N bits, and M bits out of a high order of the N bits comprise the same value. A recorded Gray code is detected in a first servo sector to generate a detected Gray code, and an error in the detected Gray code is corrected by inverting at least one bit in the detected Gray code comprising a value that is different from the value of the corresponding bit in the M bits.

    • A disk drive includes a spindle that defines a spindle rotation axis, and a disk drive base that has a base depression bounded by a first base depression brim. A disk is attached to the spindle, and the disk includes a disk outer peripheral extent. The disk drive includes a disk limiter protrusion extending over an arc of the disk outer peripheral extent that spans no more than 20° about the spindle rotation axis. According to one aspect of the invention, a first radius that extends from the spindle rotation axis over the first base depression brim is angularly disposed no more than 25° from any second radius that extends from the spindle rotation axis to the disk limiter protrusion. According to another aspect of the invention, the disk limiter protrusion may protrude from an edge of a VCM yoke top plate towards the spindle rotation axis.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of servo sectors defining a plurality of tracks, wherein the servo sectors are written to the disk by servoing off of spiral tracks. The head is positioned over a target track in response to the servo sectors, and coefficients of a first sinusoid are generated corresponding to the target track, wherein the first sinusoid corresponds a repeatable position error of the head relative to the target track. The coefficients of the first sinusoid comprise a coherent component due to a repeatable runout of the disk and a spiral component due to writing the servo sectors by servoing off of the spiral tracks, where the spiral component varies based on a radial location of the head. The head is servoed over the target track in response to the coefficients.

    • The invention is directed to a head positioning servo system for disk drives employing a dedicated servo surface. A plurality of servo cells are recorded on the servo surface each including a sync field for storing multiple magnetic flux transitions. Each sync field consists of multiple unit areas wherein each of said transitions is selectively stored in one or more of said unit areas. In the preferred embodiment, each sync field includes double frequency (2f) transitions which are stored in a single unit area and single frequency (1f) transitions which are stored in two adjacent unit areas. The two types of transitions are used to encode each sync field to define either a valid ("1") sync or a nonvalid ("0") sync. Valid syncs are detected to generate sync pulses for timing control to derive both rotational and radial position information from the servo surface.

    • A method and apparatus for originally recording servo information on a disk surface. The apparatus comprises a servo writer assembly which includes an optical encoder having a movable input member and means for producing an output signal which indicates small uniform units of movement of said input member. The servo writer assembly is detachably mounted to a disk storage system with the optical encoder input member tightly physically coupled to the head arm of the storage system head disk assembly. During servo writing, the optical encoder output signal is connected in a closed servo loop with the head positioner motor so that the positioner motor can then be operated to precisely radially increment the servo head, track by track, over the disk servo surface.

    • A disk drive includes a rotatable data storage disk, a transducer, and a controller. The transducer is configured to write data on the disk. The controller is configured to receive data from a host device, to measure at least one parameter that is indicative of a time varying characteristic associated with the disk drive, and to write the measured parameter and the data on the disk through the transducer. The time varying characteristic that is measured may include temperature, air pressure, flying height of the transducer relative to the disk, and/or a position error signal (PES) that is indicative of a radial location of the transducer relative to a desired location along a track on the disk. The measured parameters may be embedded within the data that is written on the disk, they may be written in a same track and/or sector as the data, and/or they may be written on a reserved portion of the disk.
