    • Before execution of a routing area update (RAU) procedure associated with a handover of a mobile station (40) from a source cell to a target cell in a mobile telecommunication system, a handover required message (14) is sent to a core network (CN) from a source base station (16) in the source cell having a mobile station identifier (IMSI), an identifier of at least one target cell routing area code (RAC) and a temporary logical link identity (TLLI). In response thereto, a handover command message (32) is sent to the source base station from the core network having a packet-temporary mobile subscriber identity (P-TMSI) for transfer to the mobile station in ciphered form over a radio interface between the source base station and the mobile station so that the mobile station is able to send packet-switched (PS) data on an uplink before the RAU procedure is executed.

    • A method with which cellular network terminals are informed of a possibility to use services of 3G mobile communication networks in a radio access network. A spare bit of the broadcast message SI3 of GSM system is defined as a bit indicating, whether the current GERAN cell supports UMTS service through the Iu interface or not. In a favourable case, another SI message is broadcast including a description of the PBCCH where Iu information for mobile stations is placed. Should the GERAN support also the GPRS service, said another message is SI13, and if the GERAN does not support the GPRS service, said another message is SI13alt. This message can only be employed by UMTS capable mobile stations. By means of the invention the information presumed by the use of the UMTS network can quickly be acquired by a mobile station, which for example arrives in a GERAN cell.

    • A system and method for minimizing signalling loads due to mutual exchanges of information between neighboring cells in which the same session is transmitted, and for reducing the time required to transmit MBMS neighbor cell information messages in a serving cell when a higher level of signalling occurs, wherein all broadcast control channel (BCCH) carriers indicated in a BCCH allocation are monitored by a mobile station (MS). A list of the cells having the strongest non-serving carriers is updated as often as the duration of the running average for measurements of the BCCH allocation. Base transceiver station identity codes (BSICs) and neighboring cell indexes of BCCH carriers are added to an uplink radio link control/medium access control (RLC/MAC) message that is transmitted to a network. As a result, the network is provided with the identity of which cell the mobile station is most likely to reselect to upon reception of the uplink RLC/MAC control message carrying the BSICs and neighboring cell indexes of the neighboring non-serving BCCH carriers of the mobile station.
