    • The present invention provides methods and apparatus for the color calibration of displays. These methods are particularly useful for displays having properties different than those associated with cathode ray tubes (CRT). Some displays, for example liquid crystal displays (LCD), have a high luminance black, the chromas of their primaries are not independent of their luminance levels, the intensities of their primaries are not strictly monotonically increasing with respect to their RGB levels, the color additivity of their subpixels is affected by crosstalk or leakage and their color measurements are dependent on the view angle of the observer. Therefore, the usage of CRT methods is deficient for such displays. The methods and apparatus of the present invention overcome several deficiencies generally found in non-CRT display devices by employing techniques associated with the use of restricted ranges for the primaries, subtracting the color black from all color measurements, forming a modified display matrix and/or creating tables which correct errors due to the non-linearities or color leakages of these display devices. These enable images to be processed using algorithms of different complexity and precision.

    • A system for aligning two plates, in accordance with the present invention, includes a first plate having a lithographically patterned structure formed on a first surface. A second plate also has a lithographically patterned structure formed on a second surface, the first and second surfaces being disposed to face each other. The patterned structures of the plates have corresponding and opposing edges to provide an interference fit between the patterned structures of the first and second plates wherein self-alignment between the first and second plates is realized by engaging the corresponding and opposing edges in the interference fit. A method for aligning two plates includes the steps of providing the system described above, coarsely aligning the plates in a first state which includes an interference between the patterned structures, adjusting at least one of plates to provide a second state having a clearance fit between the patterned structures and moving the plates together and returning to the first state to align the plates relative to each other.

    • The present invention includes a method of preparing a dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layer using one of a mechanical mask, photo-resist, UV treatment, and ridge and fringe field methods. The present invention further provides a multi-domain, wide viewing angle liquid-crystal display, comprising: a bottom substrate; a first transparent conductive layer; a top substrate; a color filter layer; a second transparent conductive layer; a first dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layer; a second dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layer, the second dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layer being spaced adjacent to and facing the first dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layer; spacers; and a liquid-crystal material. Each of the first alignment layer and the second alignment layer is divided into a plurality of pixels each having a boundary and at least two domains and the domains of each of the multi-domain, dry deposited liquid-crystal alignment layers is obtained by a method selected from the group consisting of: a mechanical mask, photo-resist, UV treatment, and ridge and fringe field. The multi-domain, wide viewing angle liquid-crystal display of the present invention can be operated in the in-plane switching mode, which results in reduced image sticking.
