    • A drill bit and method of drilling a subterranean formation are disclosed in which the drill bit is configured with a non-axial gage portion of a bit body. The non-axial gage portion of the bit body presents a peripheral profile which is not parallel to the centerline of the bit body to provide a contact area for engagement of the sidewall of the borehole by at least one cutting element carried by the non-axial gage portion to enlarge the borehole from a first diameter cut by cutting elements on the bit face. The configuration of the drill bit lessens loading on the cutting elements of the drill bit, facilitates maneuverability of the drill bit downhole and enhances steerability of the drill bit.

    • A rotary drag bit including exterior features to control the depth of cut by cutters mounted thereon, so as to control the volume of formation material cut per bit rotation as well as the torque experienced by the bit and an associated bottomhole assembly. The exterior features preferably precede, taken in the direction of bit rotation, cutters with which they are associated, and provide sufficient bearing area so as to support the bit against the bottom of the borehole under weight on bit without exceeding the compressive strength of the formation rock. The exterior features may be oriented and configured to function optimally at a predicted rate of penetration, or range of rates, at which the bit may be operated, such rate or rates being further optionally maximized in softer formations in light of the ability of the bit to hydraulically clear a maximum volume of formation cuttings to prevent so-called bit balling.

    • A drill bit for drilling subterranean formations includes a device to provide a "universal" effect between the shank and crown for self alignment of the crown with the bore hole in the formation. The bit is suitable for downhole assemblies configured for straight drilling, directional drilling and navigational drilling. The device can be incorporated into both drag bits and roller-type "rock" bits. Preferred embodiments include a flexible sub connecting the crown to the shank portion and having reduced stiffness relative to the drill string. Alternatively a spherical universal joint or trunnion type universal is used. Replaceable lugs increase durability and reliability of the universal. The device equalizes the loads on cutters while reducing wear, average loads, and impact loads on cutters. Bore hole diameter and chatter of the bit in the bore hole are reduced, promoting maximum efficiency and rate of penetration as wobble and precession are minimized.

    • A drill bit for use with earth drilling equipment, the drill bit having a body and movable cutting members or blades variably positionable between a first position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is generally equal to or less than the diameter of the drill bit body and a second position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is greater than the diameter of the drill bit body. The second, expanded position is assumed by the cutting members when they are in contact with the bottom of a hole and are thereby urged upwardly relative to the bit body. The first, retracted position is assumed by the cutting members when the drill bit is being tripped into or out of the hole and, because the cutting members are essentially retracted relative to the bit body, the drill bit does not become jammed downhole. A fixed-blade adaptation of the invention is also contemplated.
