    • A multi-protocol wireless communication baseband transceiver includes a baseband transmit processing module and a baseband receive processing module. The baseband transmit processing module includes an encoding module, an interleaving module, a plurality of symbol mapping modules, a plurality of domain conversion modules, a plurality of cyclic prefix modules, a plurality of compensation modules, and a control module that is operably coupled to produce preamble set up information and payload set up information based on a mode of a plurality of protocol modes. The baseband receive processing module includes a plurality of receive compensation modules, a plurality of cyclic prefix removal modules, a plurality of receive domain conversion modules, an equalizing module, a plurality of demapping modules, a deinterleaving module, a decoding module, and a receive control module that is operably coupled to determine the mode from the plurality of protocol modes and the compensation control signals based on the at least one compensated stream of symbols.

    • A radio frequency transmitter includes a baseband transmit processing module, a mixing module, a power amplifier, a transmit power sense module, and a transmit power control module. The baseband transmit processing module is operably coupled to encode outbound data into outbound baseband signals in accordance with one of a plurality of encoding protocols. The mixing module is operably coupled to convert the outbound baseband signals into outbound radio frequency signals. The power amplifier is operably coupled to amplify the outbound RF signals prior to transmission to produce amplified outbound RF signals. The transmit power sense module is operably coupled to sense the amplified outbound RF signals to provide a transmit signal strength indication (TSSI). The transmit power control module is operably coupled to adjust gain of the baseband transmit processing module, the mixing module, and/or the power amplifier based on the TSSI and the particular encoding protocol used to produce the baseband signals.

    • New version packet data devices support a backwards-compatible signal format. New version devices operate within a first frequency band while old version devices operate within a second frequency band. The first frequency band differs from but overlaps with the second frequency band. The new version devices may operate on a first carrier frequency (within the first frequency band) while old version devices may operate at a second carrier frequency (within the second frequency band). The new version devices and/or the old version devices may also support carrier-less modulations. Preamble, header, and trailer portions of a new version signal include a plurality of spectral copies of a baseband modulated signal. One or more of these spectral copies of the baseband modulated signal is/are indistinguishable from corresponding components of an old version signal. The payload of the new version signal may be formed in the same manner or may be formed in have a wider bandwidth, higher data rate format.
