Firelighters. - In the construction of firelighters, pieces of wood are placed by hand in suitable positions upon a travelling table which feeds them to a wire stapling machine. The table is shown in plan, Fig. 3, and in side elevation, Fig. 1. The completed firelighter, Fig. 9, is composed of parallel bars of wood united to a crosspiece by wire staples. The pieces A are brought by a travelling band V, Fig. 3, to an attendant, who places them singly in transverse apertures in a travelling belt running on the table E, Fig. 1, and metal plate G on the upper surface thereof. The belt consists of two parallel chains passing over flanged pulleys K, K and formed of hinged links M, Fig. 5, having apertures gearing with the teeth of driving pinions L, L . Transversely between the chains, and bolted to projections m on the links thereof, are metal bars N, in the spaces between which the pieces of wood are placed. When the firelighter consists of four such pieces, there are projections n upon every fifth bar N, acting as guides for an attendant in placing the crosspieces in position. The belt carries the pieces under the wire stapling or riveting machine D, where they are fastened before being thrown off on to the travelling band W.

Compound paper.-Relates to blinds made of paper and consists in rendering them more or less opaque while retaining the light or normal colour on the surfaces. A layer of thin more or less opaque coloured matter or material is interposed between the outer layers or surfaces of the usual colour which latter may be cream or white &c. The layer of more or less opaque colour, which may be blue, sage green, &c., may be coated on one side of one piece of paper and covered with a thin sheet of lighter paper, or it may be on both sides of, or consist of, an intermediate sheet, covered on each side with light-coloured paper. The compound paper may be manufactured in a machine which applies the opaque colour mixed with gum, glue, size, or other adhesive and then applies a thin covering sheet from a separate roll to the coated side.

摘要： A lawn edge trimmer includes a cutting device 122 and a motorised fan 120 arranged to blow cuttings produced by the cutting device onto a lawn 202 being trimmed. Preferably the cutting device is a swimmer line. The trimmer may include an elongate body 102 with a handle 104 and a cover component 124, 126 partially covering the fan and/or the cutting device. Preferably a guide device 116 including a rotatable wheel 116 mounted on a spindle 114 extends through the elongate body. The fan and the cutting device may be mounted on the spindle and the cutting device attaches to a central hub/boss 121 of the fan. Advantageously lawn edges are trimmed rapidly and the edge trimmings are deliberately directed toward/onto an uncut lawn for subsequent collection by a mower.
