    • This invention relates to a method of, and apparatus for, separating contaminates from a base liquid and whereby the contaminated base liquid is passed through a pretreatment vessel before being passed to a conventional separator. In one described embodiment, the pretreatment vessel (11) is of generally cylindrical form arranged with its axis substantially vertical, base liquid to be de-contaminated is supplied into the mid-height regions of the vessel through a tangential device (16) to cause circulating flows within the vessel (11), and the vessel (11) includes an outlet (13a) in its top regions (13) for the release of light contaminates, an outlet (12a) in its lower regions for the release of heavy contaminates, and an outlet duct (30) in its mid-region, spaced from the inlet for releasing partially contaminated liquid from the vessel (11), for release into a conventional separator (26). Preferably the method includes the steps of introducing a first treatment material to the base liquid before, or as, the base liquid enters the vessel (11) and adding a second treatment material into the partially decontaminated base liquid to be directed to the conventional separator (26).

    • The invention relates to a separator, for separating contaminates from a base liquid, and essentially includes a roof arrangement by which at least part of the roof arrangement depends into the liquid in the separator. In one embodiment the roof arrangement (14) is of generally inverted conical form, the decontaminated liquid flows from the separator through a flow modifying member (25), which dampens any circulating flows in the liquid, and upwardly out of the separator to a reservoir defined by the inverted conical roof arrangement (14). The arrangement also includes means (30a) for releasing gases from the volumes beneath the roof arrangement (14), thereby to maintain the whole of the roof arrangement (14) in contact with the liquid to assist a reducing circulating flow in the liquid on the upper regions of the separator vessel.

    • The invention provides a method for the purification of contaminated water such as leachate from a land fill site. The treatment involves the application to the water of anionic and cationic coagulents at different stages, and between the application of the coagulents precipitation agents are added to precipitate the contaminants which typically are metal ions in solution. The coagulants are polyelectrolytes which in the case of the first added coagulant cause formation of a floc and the addition of the second coagulant causes heavy deposition of contaminants. Separation follows and the separated solids are passed to a sludge thickening tank whilst the separated liquid which is of high pH is stripped of ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds. The pH is subsequently reduced to zero and subsequently the carbon dioxide is removed. The remaining liquid can either be subjected to a bio-oxidation treatment or filtered by reverse osmosis in the latter case to provide clean water which can be returned to a stream or river. The invention also provides a novel form of stripping of ammonia and carbon dioxide and a vessel for use in the same.

    • This invention is concerned with the manufacture of firelighters and, more particularly, firelighters for domestic use. In the prior art method for making firelighters the curable resin and all the other desirable additives are mixed and the liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel is then stirred into the mixture. The present invention allows a more uniform distribution of the liquid hydrocarbonaceous throughout the firelighters. In one described embodiment the method for making firelighters comprises the steps of producing an acidic emulsion by mixing a liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel, such as kerosine, with water, a curing agent, and an emulsifying agent, mixing a blend of curable resin, which may comprise urea/formaldehyde, and water, and adding the blend of curable resin and water to the acidic emulsion. In another embodiment a solids material in particulate form, preferably a solids fuel, is included in the emulsion.
