    • An ink manifold for supplying liquid ink to a heater chip of an inkjet printhead. Ink ports on one side of the manifold feed liquid ink to the ink channels on the other side of the manifold, and thus to the backside ink trenches of the heater chip. The placement and number of ink ports formed in the ink manifold are optimized so that when the heater chip and the ink manifold are scaled down in size, the ink carrying capacity of the printhead components is not compromised. Similarly, when the ink manifold is scaled down, the optimization process allows the seal width between the ink port features of the manifold to be maintained above a specified minimum.

    • A method is described for controlling a micro-fluid ejection head that includes first and second heater chips disposed in a staggered overlapping arrangement, where a number of the nozzles of the first heater chip are substantially aligned with a corresponding number of the nozzles of the second heater chip in an overlapping region that includes N number of sub-regions. In one embodiment, the method includes: (a) determining a difference between the temperatures of the first and second heater chips; (b) determining a first percentage of nozzles in each sub-region of the first heater chip to be used in printing a first portion of the printed image; (c) determining a second percentage of nozzles in each sub-region of the second heater chip to be used in printing a second portion of the printed image; and (d) printing the first and second portions of the printed image using the first percentage of nozzles in each sub-region of the first heater chip and the second percentage of nozzles in each sub-region of the second heater chip. The first and second percentages of nozzles may be determined based on the difference in temperature between the first and second heater chips.

    • An ink jet print head is controllable based at least in part on q number of first control signals and p number of second control signals. The print head includes a print head integrated circuit chip having ink-heating resistors for generating heat when activated. The print head chip also has a switching circuit for receiving the first and second control signals, and for selectively activating the resistors by allowing electrical current to flow through selected resistors based at least in part on the first and second control signals. The switching circuit is operable in either a first operating mode or a second operating mode, where q is equivalent to q1 in the first operating mode, and is equivalent to q2 in the second operating mode, and where q1 is twice q2. In the first operating mode, p is equivalent to p1, and in the second operating mode, p is equivalent to p2, where p2 is twice p1. The product of q1 multiplied by p1 is equivalent to the product of q2 multiplied by p2. The print head also includes an operating mode selection circuit connected to the print head integrated circuit. The configuration of the operating mode selection circuit determines whether the switching circuit operates in the first operating mode or the second operating mode. When in the first operating mode, the print head requires four passes across a print medium to completely print an image, while in the second operating mode, the print head requires only two passes. Thus, a print head implemented according to the second operating mode offers a higher performance design point. However, a print head implemented according to the first operating mode is less expensive to manufacture. Therefore, the invention provides a single print head integrated circuit chip which may be used for two different cost/performance design points, the selection of which depends upon the configuration of the operating mode selection circuit.

    • An ink manifold constructed with a number of semiconductor tiles which are fastened end to end on a rigid base member to form a page wide print mechanism. Each tile is constructed with ink channels on one side in liquid communication with ink outlet ports on the opposite side. The ink channels carry ink from ports in the base member to the outlet ports of the tiles. The interface between each tile defines a boundary. An inkjet printhead is fastened over each boundary of the tiled manifold so that the ink inlet ports of the printhead are aligned with the ink outlet ports of the underlying tiles. No ink passes across the boundary of the adjacent manifold tiles. The fabrication of the individual tiles from a semiconductor wafer facilitates usage of the wafer when fabricating page wide print mechanisms.
