    • A method of rotating a crank shaft and in internal detonation engine are provided. The internal detonation engine comprises a deflagration to detonation transition section. The deflagration to detonation transition section is connected to a main cylinder, which houses a piston. Inducing a detonation wave from the deflagration wave and passing the detonation wave through a fluid, gives rise to high pressure and temperature in a cylinder and pushes a piston towards bottom dead center. An internal detonation reciprocating engine may be a single cylinder and may be either a two or four stroke engine. A two-stroke internal detonation reciprocating engine is similar to a four-stroke internal detonation reciprocating engine but has different valve placements. Detonations produce a more thorough combustion of the fuel and may, thereby, yield reduced emissions of carbon monoxide as compared to internal combustion engines.

    • An automatic telephone answering system wherein disconnection from the telephone line following calling party hang up is in response to the detection of dial tone, utilizes a signal detector responsive to voice and steady tone signals for providing an indication of the status of an incoming signal on the telephone line, and a processor for monitoring line signal status to determine the presence of dial tone. Following a determination of the presence of dial tone as an incoming line signal, the processor acts to automatically disconnect the system from the telephone line by opening a telephone line connection relay. The determination of dial tone is made based upon the continuous existence, over a predetermined time interval, of an incoming line signal status representative of a steady tone signal, rather than an absolute, single event detection. An automatic telephone answering and message recording system having remote access message playback, and which disconnects from the telephone line in response to dial tone, further includes processor actuated circuitry for inserting a blank interval in an incoming line signal prior to being recorded. The circuitry is actuated upon a determination by the processor that the incoming line signal is a steady tone signal, the determination being made based upon the existence, over a predetermined time interval, of an incoming line signal status representative of a steady tone signal. The duration of the time interval for such determination being a shorter period than the duration of the time interval for a dial tone determination.

    • The system and method described herein uses a hybrid pulsed detonation engine (PDE) system to drive a turbine that powers an electric generator. The combustion chamber of the PDE is shaped in a helical form, so that the external length of the section is reduced, while maintaining the distance for acceleration to detonation. This allows the achievement of deflagration to detonation transition without the help of turbulence enhancing obstacles, while keeping the overall size of the detonation tube small. The PDE output can be scaled by: increasing the cross sectional area of the detonation chamber; increasing the number of detonation tubes; and increasing the frequency of operation of the PDE. The replacement of conventional deflagrative internal combustion engines, including gas turbines and reciprocating engines, with pulsed detonation engines for electric power generation, may provide fuel savings and have a lower environmental impact.

    • A permeable membrane system comprised of at least two sheets, at least one of the two sheets being a grooved permeable membrane having regularly spaced grooves on at least one surface, the grooves having a predetermined spacing factor, the grooved permeable membrane either having essentially no barrier layer or having a barrier layer on one grooved surface, the sheets being positioned in a configuration with the grooves of that one grooved surface of the grooved permeable membrane sheet forming feed channels with a surface of another sheet which covers that one grooved surface, the grooves being about 0.5 to about 100 mils wide and deep and the feed channels being used to deliver the feed stream to the membrane surface. Preferably, both sheets are permeable membranes. The grooves in the sheets are preferably about 5 to about 35 mils wide and deep for reverse osmosis, about 0.5 to about 20 mils wide and deep for gas separation, and about 15 to about 75 mils wide and deep for ultrafiltration. The grooves on one side of one sheet may be aligned with the grooves on one side of an adjacent sheet, whereby the grooves on one side of one sheet form parts of the feed channels and the corresponding grooves on one side of the other sheet form the other parts of the feed channels. Or, the grooved sheets may be alternated with planar sheets so that the grooves on one side of the grooved sheets form the feed channels with the adjacent surface of a planar sheet.
