    • PURPOSE:To continuously monitor partial discharge of a cable or a high voltage machine without influence of ambient noise, etc., and also identify the location where the partial discharge occurs. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 5 is placed in the vicinity of insulators 1B, 2A of an object 1 to be measured to which high voltage is applied, and an end of the fiber 5 is connected to a light source 4 while the other end is connected to a partial discharge measuring device 7. If partial discharge occurs at a defective part of the insulators 1B, 2A of the object 1, ultrasonic waves are generated to cause a fluctuation of the plane of polarization of light propagated in the optical fiber 5. The partial discharge measuring device 7 detects the fluctuation of the plane of polarization to monitor and measure the partial discharge of the object 1. In addition, two optical fibers are placed in the vicinity of the insulator of the object to be measured, while one of the ends is connected to one end of the other fiber and folded at a loop part to detect time difference in fluctuations of the plane of polarization due to the partial discharge, whereby the location where the partial discharge occurs can be identified.

    • PURPOSE:To enable a defective portion to be detected by applying a high voltage to cause an insulation breakdown in one portion of a cable insulator, measuring a partial discharge while conducting a commercial frequency AC voltage to a portion where no insulation breakdown resulted, and then stopping power before breakdown and destruction. CONSTITUTION:A high voltage is applied to a cable 1 for causing insulation breakdowns 3a and 3b in one portion of an insulator. Then, a signal where an amount of charge of a partial discharge is generated or increased, namely, a sign where a defective portion in a bud of a tree which is generated in the cable previously is to be broken, is detected while a commercial frequency AC voltage is applied to non-breakdown cable portion 10 where no insulation breakdown resulted. In this manner, a partial discharge which becomes the sign of breakdown in a defective portion of the insulator of the non-breakdown cable portion 10 where no insulation breakdown resulted is detected and power application is stopped before the defective portion of the insulator is broken and burnt. For enabling a defective portion of a lightning impulse voltage to be detected, a high voltage of one-shot voltage waveform which contains a high-frequency component of 1kHz or higher is used.
