    • Embodiments of the present invention provide a base station arranged to operate in a wireless communications system as a booster base station providing a cell which is operable as a booster cell providing additional capacity to a coverage cell which it at least partially overlaps, the booster cell being operable to function in a first mode and a second mode, wherein the booster cell provides more additional capacity to the coverage cell when functioning in the first mode than it does when functioning in the second mode, the booster base station comprising: a listening module configured to perform a survey of the uplink interference received at the booster base station; a storage module configured to store uplink scheduling information including information indicating uplink transmission resources granted to user equipments served by the coverage cell; a calculation module configured to calculate an adjusted uplink interference by subtracting from the survey of uplink interference a contribution made to the survey of uplink interference by user equipments which, based on the uplink scheduling information, are not served by the coverage cell; and a switching module configured to switch the booster cell from functioning in the second mode to functioning in the first mode in dependence upon whether the adjusted uplink interference meets a switching criterion.

    • In an LTE-based wireless communication system, each channel such as a control channel PDCCH is transmitted to the UE from one serving cell (the primary cell or Pcell). At the cell border the Pcell suffers from increased interference from neighbouring cells and typically a lower effective transmission rate is used to increase robustness to interference, for both data and control channel. Also, neighbouring cells are typically given different cell IDs, which can be used as a basis for distinguishing transmissions from different cells, even if radio frames are time-aligned. The invention modifies the control channel operation by arranging a common mapping of transmitted symbols to control channel resources in two different cells so that the same control channel message (P) or part of the message can be transmitted jointly from the two cells ((a),(b)), avoiding resources used in the cells for respective reference signals (R). This can be used to improve control channel reception at the cell border, without using more control channel resources. This would be beneficial in both normal system operation and also for Co-operative Multi-Point (CoMP) operation, e.g. using joint transmission techniques for data.
