    • A buffer status reporting scheme for a terminal (10) wishing to transmit data simultaneously in multiple RATs of a wireless communication network, which enables the co-ordination of multiple base stations (12, 14) of different RATs (e.g. LTE eNB, UMTS base station, WiFi access point, etc.) with the assistance of the terminal (10) in order to achieve efficient radio resource scheduling for multi-RAT multi-flow aggregation in uplink. A radio bearer is configured for multi-RAT multi-flow aggregation by the network, and multiple logical channel IDs are assigned to this RB that may be associated with different RATs. Logical channels associated with a certain RAT (or a given set of RATs) may be grouped into one logical channel group for radio resource scheduling reason. The terminal (10) performs buffer status reporting, according to the configuration, on all involved RATs and sends reports/indications to one or more involved base stations (12.14).

    • A scheme for the transmission and reception of downlink control channel messages in LTE which can be applied in association with random access transmission (RACH) in the uplink. Initially, the UE monitors a specific search space on the downlink control channel (PDCCH) for specific types of message (DCI messages) from the eNodeB following a RACH transmission. Subsequently (112 - 120) the UE is configured to monitor a different search space and/or control channel (e.g. E-PDCCH) for the same type of DCI message. The UE then proceeds (122) to monitor the different search space and/or control channel. Allowing DCI messages to be transmitted on the E-PDCCH rather than the PDCCH reduces the loading on PDCCH and improves control channel efficiency (in terms of resource use). In the case of RACH, this raises the limit on the rate at which random access transmissions can be processed. The potential increase in total number of blind decodings required to receive the E-PDCCH may be mitigated by means of limiting the duration of monitoring the E- PDCCH to subframes where the expected DCI messages may be transmitted by the network.

    • A new random access (RA) procedure designed for a scenario where a large number of low-cost and low-capability LTE devices are deployed within a coverage area. After an initial, contention-based RA procedure, the network assigns the UE fixed PRACH resources in time (and possibly frequency) and a fixed RA preamble for use in future RA procedures. The RA preambles are therefore multiplexed in time, increasing their effective number. The eNodeB maintains a list of UE identity to preamble+resources associations and is thus able to identify which UE is accessing PRACH in a given subframe. To allow a UE to indicate that it is suitable for inclusion in this new procedure, a means of using the RA procedure to transmit information earlier in the access procedure is designed. The set of all permissible preambles is partitioned and each partition is associated with a particular state of the UE with respect to the information it wishes to transmit. To indicate its state, the UE chooses a preamble in the initial contention-based RA procedure from the relevant partition, rather than at random. The eNodeB is able similarly to indicate information to the UE by its choice of preamble+resource in the new RA procedure.

    • The method of the invention allows transmission of UE-specific resource allocations in a Downlink Control Information (DCI) format containing information for multiple UEs in the same PDCCH. Currently in LTE, a single control channel (PDCCH) is transmitted to the UE for any UL or DL resource allocation, except for semi-persistent scheduling (SPS). The present method provides a new combinatory set of preconfigured messages, for efficiently transmitting control information for those instances where full flexibility is not required. In order to avoid increasing the number of blind decodes, the size of the new DCI format is the same as an existing DCI format, preferably the same as the size of DCI formats 0/1A/3/3A, and is transmitted in the common search space. The number of required bits is reduced by signalling only one of a limited set of DCI messages per UE. Thus the PDCCH is effectively able to support an increased number of UEs.

    • A scheme for transmission of control channel information in a compact form intended to support SPS (Semi-Persistent Scheduling) in a wireless communication system. As applied to LTE, the scheme is to indicate a pre-configured UE-specific resource allocation in a Downlink Control Information (DCI) format containing information for multiple UEs in the same PDCCH. In order to avoid increasing the number of blind decodes, the DCI format size may be the same as an existing DCI format. Preferably the size of the new format is the same as that of DCI formats 0/1 A/3/3A. The number of required bits per UE is minimised by signalling only one of a limited set of DCI messages per UE. The scheme provides a means for re-configuring SPS resources for multiple UEs using a single PDCCH transmission, whilst enabling better support for variable packet sizes and variable intervals between packets than currently defined SPS.
