    • An encoder for encoding data as trellis coded data and a decoder for decoding the trellis coded data. The encoder uses a rate 1/2 convolutional encoder punctured to a rate k/n to produce n symbols from k input bits. The symbols are converted by a converter to sets of p symbols and provided to an interleaver. In the interleaver certain ones of the symbols are delayed. Symbol sets are output from the interleaver to a 2.sup.P -ary modem for modulation and transmission. The decoder uses a modem for providing from the modulated data sets of p symbols. A deinterleaver delays certain ones of the symbols to achieve time alignment of the originally interleaved symbols. The sets of time aligned symbols are provided to metric calculators for computing signal metrics which are provided to a converter for providing n sets of metrics to a metric decoder. The metric decoder computes from the n sets of metrics an estimate of the encoded k data bits.

    • A wireless device is provided with a wireless transceiver having a joint signal transmit/receive section, and a number of signal up/down conversion sections to transmit and receive signals wirelessly in accordance with a first and a second protocol. The wireless device is further provided with a controller/signal processing section to control and perform, in a coordinated manner, the transmit and receive operations in accordance with the two protocols. In various embodiments, the wireless device is further provided with a processor programmed to implement a time sharing schedule to facilitate the coordinated control and performance of the transmit and receive operations. In some of these embodiments, the processor is further programmed to monitor the transmit and receive workloads of the two protocols and adaptively perform the coordinated control and signal processing, based at least in part on the observed workloads. In various embodiments, the protocols may be selected pairs of Bluetooth, 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, Home RF and the like. The wireless device may also be used as a master device or a gateway device of two wireless networks.

    • A wireless device is provided with a wireless transceiver to transmit and receive signals in accordance with a first protocol to and from network devices of a first wireless network, and a controller manager to control operation of the wireless transceiver. The wireless device is further provided with a wireless receiver to receive signals transmitted in accordance with a second protocol by network devices of a second wireless network, and the controller manager is equipped to control operation of the wireless transceiver based at least in part on at least one signaling characteristic of the received signals from network devices of the second wireless network, to reduce interference with proximately located ones of the network devices of the second wireless network. In various embodiments, the controller manager suspends operation of the wireless transceiver whenever interference is predicted. In other embodiments, the controller manager causes an appropriate filter to be applied whenever interference is predicted.
