    • A fuel system for a marine engine has a recirculation cooler which receives a portion of fuel discharged from a fuel pump, cools that fuel, and then returns the cooled fuel to the inlet of the fuel pump to reduce fuel vapor formation and to cool the pump as the cooled fuel flows through the pump. The recirculation cooler is preferably formed of a material of high thermal conductivity and has a water passage adjacent to the fuel passage to reduce the temperature of the fuel that flows through the recirculation cooler. The recirculation cooler is preferably used in high heat applications or with a speed controlled fuel pump, with a pulse width modulated drive, for example. In these applications, during at least some fuel flow conditions, the flow of fuel through the fuel pump may be insufficient to cool the fuel pump motor and may cause increased fuel vapor formation. Desirably, the cooler fuel provided from the recirculation cooler to the inlet of the fuel pump supplements the cooling of the fuel pump motor and reduces fuel vapor formation.

    • A fuel pump module constructed to be disposed in a vehicle fuel tank has a primary fuel pump with a fuel inlet disposed adjacent the bottom of the module and a fuel outlet which delivers pressurized fuel to an engine and also a jet pump disposed in a recess of the module and closely adjacent the bottom of the fuel tank to draw fuel into the module from the fuel tank in response to fuel flow through the jet pump. Disposing the jet pump in the recess of the module and closely adjacent to the bottom of the fuel tank enables the jet pump to draw substantially all of the fuel from the fuel tank into the module to ensure that the primary fuel pump can deliver an adequate supply of fuel to the engine even during extremely low fuel level conditions in the fuel tank. Disposing the inlet of the primary fuel pump closely adjacent to the bottom of the module and also the bottom of the fuel tank facilitates initial priming of the primary fuel pump after the fuel tank and module become empty and fuel is subsequently added to the fuel tank. Thus, after a vehicle has run out of gas, and the operator pours a small amount of gas into the gas tank, the primary fuel pump is able to prime, operate the jet pump to draw some of the added fuel into the module and deliver added fuel to the engine so that the engine may be started and the vehicle driven to a gas station.

    • In a fuel delivery system that includes a pump for supplying fuel under pressure from a supply to an internal combustion engine and a pressure regulator for returning excess fuel from the engine to the supply, a check valve is positioned between the pump and the engine for preventing back-flow of fuel from the engine to the pump. The valve has a flow passage with a central axis and a valve seat orientated away from the pump. A valve element is positioned within the passage for axial motion against a coil spring as a function of fuel flow from the pump. A first portion of passage surrounding the valve element has a cross section to fluid flow that increases substantially monotonically from the seat for an axial distance that at least corresponds to maximum travel of the valve element against the spring. A substantially cylindrical second portion of the valve passage is positioned adjacent to the first portion and surrounds the valve element, and the valve element is slidably retained in a keeper within the cylindrical portion of the passage. Thus, axial and lateral motions of the valve element are stabilized, greatly reducing pressure pulses delivered from the pump to the engine.

    • An electric motor fuel pump has an inner gear rotor and an outer gear rotor each with a plurality of radially opposed intermeshing teeth each having a pair of driving surfaces and defining circumferentially disposed expanding and ensmalling pumping chambers through which fuel is drawn and then discharged under pressure. The inner gear rotor is coupled to a motor armature journalled for rotation within a fuel pump housing to drive the inner gear rotor and the associated outer gear rotor. The teeth of each gear rotor have a step formed thereon providing a pair of offset driving surfaces on at least each driving face of each tooth and preferably offset trailing surfaces on each trailing face of each tooth. The stepped tooth profile permits greater eccentricity between inner and outer gear rotors which increases the fuel displacement of the gear rotors. The stepped tooth profile also provides more teeth for a given pitch diameter and increased design freedom which facilitates optimization of the drive angle between mated gear rotors.

A brush cap has an end received in the cavity with an interference fit wherein the end of the brush cap has an outer diameter that is larger than the diameter of the cavity and the end of the brush cap has strength that causes it to deform upon installation into the cavity without causing significant plastic deformation of the wall of the cavity.
