    • Various mechanisms for reducing food waste in a food waste disposer are disclosed. In each of the reduction mechanisms, structures are provided for shearing food waste as it passes through or past a rotating shredder plate of the disposer. In one embodiment, the reduction mechanism has a rotatable plate coupled to a rotational source and positioned for rotation relative to an inner wall of a stationary ring. The plate has a fixed lug attached to the rotatable plate and has a movable lug attached to the rotatable plate. In another embodiment, the reduction mechanism includes a rotatable plate coupled to a rotational source and a stationary plate disposed adjacent the rotatable plate. The stationary plate or impeller defines a plurality of apertures therethough. At least one first portion of the rotatable plate or impeller shears over at least some of the apertures in the stationary plate to shear the food waste.

    • A baffle (160) for a food waste disposer to reduce noise is disclosed. The baffle (160) has a diaphragm that allows solid and liquid waste to pass through the diaphragm, and accordingly does not substantially affect the normal operation of the disposer. However, because the baffle (160) covers the central opening in the conventional mounting gasket (150) of the prior art, a direct path from the grinding mechanism in the disposer (110) to the sink (120) is blocked, thus muffling the noise coming from the grinding mechanism. Additionally, the disclosed baffles are preferably, but not necessarily, designed so as to create a water dam on their surface by impeding the flow of water from the sink faucet in a way to create a pool of water. The disclosed baffles (160) may be installed in the drain opening (122) of a sink (120) above the conventional mounting gasket, although other embodiments are also disclosed.

    • A system and method are provided for a food loading station having a disposer that grinds food waste that is located at a facility that processes food waste. A storage tank receives a slurry of food waste and water from the disposer. A controller is connected to the disposer and receives a first information. A remote module in communication with the controller receives at least the first information, and determines a second information. A terminal associated with the facility and connected to the remote module receives the second information. In a first embodiment, the first information is user identification information for users that operate the system. The remote module also receives system malfunction information that associates particular system malfunctions with the users based on malfunction times for the system malfunctions and login times for the users, and determines whether a particular user has more than a predetermined number of associated system malfunctions. The terminal receives the identification information for the particular user when the particular user has more than the predetermined number of associated system malfunctions. In a second embodiment, the first information is operational data associated with the system. The remote module determines whether maintenance is needed for the system based on the operational data, and generates a maintenance recommendation when maintenance isneeded for the system. In a third embodiment, the first information is operational data associated with the system. The remote module monitors the operational data and determines whether a system malfunction has occurred based on the operational data, and generates an alert for the system malfunction when the system malfunction has occurred. The terminal receives the alert for the system malfunction.

    • The present invention provides for a food waste disposer having a food conveying section (102), a grinding section (104), a motor section (106) and a controller (220). The motor section comprises a switched reluctance motor having a rotor and a stator. The controller is electrically connected to the stator to control the switched reluctance machine. The controller is capable of directing rotational movement to the rotatable shaft (126) and the portion of the grinding mechanism mounted thereon. The controller is further capable of maintaining the rotational movement of the rotatable shaft at more than one rotational speed. The present invention also includes methods of operating a variable speed motor in different operational modes such as a soft start mode, optimized grinding mode, idle more, rinse mode, and an anti-jamming mode.
