An electric storage battery container for a supply of water activatable acid has a water filling opening and a liquid permeable wall surface portion through which the water activated acid gel can be released into the cell while the immobilized acid in gelled powdered or granular form is retained in the container. The gel may be concentrated H 2 SO 4 mixed with finely divided silica. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 3, 4, the acid gel container 14 which may be moulded from a thermoplastic material such as polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, has a vertical portion 15 which fits between plate stack 11 and the battery cell wall, and a horizontal portion 16 overlying plate stack 11 between the positive and negative connecting straps 12 and 13. A filling tube 17 extends from the battery cover towards upper surface 18 of the horizontal portion 16. Vertical portion 15 comprises a pair of spaced apart sidewalls 20 and 21 which have a water-permeable section such as a screen or mesh 28 and 29 in their lower area. Upper surface 18 of the horizontal portion 16 includes a similar water permeable section 30. Sidewalls 20 and 21 have moulded recesses 31 in spacers 33 and corresponding pins 32 which snap together, forming a hollow L-shaped enclosure with the horizontal portion 16 which contains the acid gel. The container is mounted in the cell and the battery is activated by pouring water through filler tube 17 on top of the container. In an alternate design the container is formed as an integral part of the battery casing and is positioned adjacent the ends of the interleaved plate stack 11. In this case the vertical portion 15 is formed by one side of the battery case and a single vertical wall with the water permeable section therein. The ends of this section 15 are provided by the walls separating the cells. In another embodiment the acid gel container is formed by a single partition wall, having the water-permeable section extending adjacent the ends of the plate stack 11 and between opposite walls of the battery cell with a portion of the battery case forming the enclosure. The filler opening and tube 17 is positioned over the container and a perforate tube may extend from the filler tube to the bottom of the space to provide a water sump. The acid gel is packed in the container around the perforate tube.

    • A method is disclosed for producing through-the-partition battery intercell electrical connections. Flat surfaced connector lugs are placed on each side of a battery partition wall, adjacent an aperture. The connector lugs are each cold formed by a pair of opposed electrodes under the application of high shear force sufficient to extrude the lugs into the aperture until they meet. The high initial shear force on the electrodes then is reduced to a lower secondary shear force, and an electrical welding current is then applied. The welding current is increased as the metal-to-metal contact of the opposed connector lugs increases until the welded connector lugs fills the aperture with metal. The welding current then ceases and the welded connector lugs are allowed to cool while still under the lower secondary shear force. The electrodes are removed from connection and the battery casing, containing liquid-tight intercell battery connections, is ready for further manufacturing or assembling steps.
