    • 1,225,459. Spill-proof electric storage battery. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 4 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 59286/69. Heading H1B. A spill-proof electric storage battery, particularly of the lead-acid type comprises aligned, nested electrically interconnected discrete cell containers 4 (Fig. 3), and has an integral liquid-impassable venting manifold. Each container 4 comprises a web 44 with two oppositely extending flanges 36, 38 on the periphery of the web. One of the flanges 36 defines a cavity for receiving a cell group and the electrolyte, and it has a reduced thickness portion 40 on its extremity which engages flange 38a of the next adjacent cell and is sealed thereto. The several discrete containers act as closure means for adjacent cell containers. The venting device is formed as an integral part of each container 4 and comprises a first chamber 30, Fig. 4, separated from a second chamber 32 by a baffle 26 which has an aperture 24 therein. Chamber 30 communicates with the cell cavity and removes electrolyte entrained in the battery gases during charging and refluxes it to the cavity. The gases pass through aperture 24 into chamber 32 where further electrolyte is separated. A vent port 28 (Fig. 3) is provided in the second chamber 32 in web 44 and opens into the second chamber 32a of the next adjacent cell, which pattern is repeated throughout the battery thus forming a multi-baffled manifold which is ultimately vented to the atmosphere. In a preferred embodiment the cell groups are compressed in the cell cavity and comprise positive and negative plates separated by a composite electrolyte immobilizing separator which comprises a thin microporous ionpermeable sheet to prevent metallic conduction as a result of " treeing " and a porous electrolyte absorbent mat for immobilizing the electrolyte.

    • 1368715 Electric cells W WITTE 27 July 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 35278/72 Heading H1B An electric cell has galvanic elements accommodated in a tubular plastics housing 18 which has an integral wall member 18b located intermediate the housing ends to divide the housing into two chambers, and covers 20, 21 closing each end of the housing 18, by a plastics cover 20 and wherein electrically conductive terminals 19, 22 and 23 are provided respectively in the intermediate wall 18b and the covers 20, 21. As shown, two button type cells are accommodated in each half of the integrally moulded housing 18. The terminals 19, 22, 23 are connected to their respective plastics supports by interengaging complimentary shaped profile sections. Contact springs 25, 26 and integrally moulded centring lugs 27, 28 firmly locate the cells 11-14 within the housing, which may be made of transparent material. The covers and housing are secured together by using adhesive, the effect of heat, a high frequency process or ultrasonic welding. The housing may form part of a pocket torch or electric razor, which may be connected to the mains for recharging.

    • 1285166 Secondary batteries ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 19 April 1971 [29 Jan l970] 20556/71 Heading HlB Overfilling of a wet accumulator is prevented by providing each cell 6 with a tube 9 communicating to a common electrolyte container 8 via a small hole 10. When the cap 7 is removed, withdrawing the sealing plugs 13 electrolyte flows through the holes 10 into the cells until the electrolyte level covers the bottom of the tubes 9, when the air pressure build up within the tube halts the flow, air within the cells being vented via a gas vent 17 (Fig. 1 not shown). The stable level of electrolyte is reached when the depth the tube extends under the electrolyte is equal to the head of electrolyte in the common electrolyte container 8. The block cover 2 may be of polypropylene and is sealed by glue, cement or welding to the polypropylene electrolyte vessel 1. The closure cap 7 may be hinged to the block and provided with means to aid removal. Seal portion 14 and further tubular seals in association with member 13 (Fig. 3, not shown) are included. When the cap is in place the cells are sealed with respect to the electrolyte container 8. Measuring marks for electrolyte level and access points for dip sticks or hydrometer may be provided in association with the gas vent.
