    • 1276625 Valves M NEITZEL 11 Feb 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 6701/70 Heading F2V A valve for a vessel holding molten metal comprises a stationary disc-shaped member 6 having at least one flow opening therein, one face of the disc being in rotary sliding engagement with an adjacent face of a rotatable valve member 9 through which extends at least one passage capable of being moved into and out of register with the or each opening in the disc, the disc 6 being thin in relation to the rotary valve member 9 and having a higher thermal conductivity. The sliding surfaces are lubricated by tar exuding from pores in the members 6 and 9 and they are held together by a thrust ring 14 bearing on an actuator ring 10. The actuator ring 10 is formed as a gear-ring and is driven by two parallel racks 11. The disc member 6 makes direct contact with the high temperature region of the melt so that, together with the thickness of section of the disc 6 relative to the member 9, the temperature of the sliding face V is 80% of that of the metal when pouring. In order to prevent the melt entering the initially cold vessel from solidifying in the region of the fixed disc 6, a powder mass which reacts exothermically to a minimum temperature is filled into the passages of the disc 6. The passages of the valve are lined with metal-ceramic or liquid cast materials having a high grade surface quality to prevent wetting.
