    • A digital projection apparatus has a first light modulation subsystem with a first light source producing linear illumination of a first spectral color and a second light source producing linear illumination of a second spectral color. A first light modulator chip has at least two independently addressable linear arrays of light modulating devices. A first spatial filter blocks reflected light and transmits diffracted light along a first optical path. A second light modulation subsystem has at least a third light source producing linear illumination of a third spectral color. A second light modulator chip has at least one independently addressable linear array of light modulating devices. A second spatial filter blocks reflected light and transmits diffracted light along a second optical path. A color combining element directs modulated light onto a common optical path. Projection optics direct modulated light toward a scanning element for projection toward a display surface.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an autostereoscopic optical apparatus which suppresses aberrations and distortion of an image and has a wide field of view.
      SOLUTION: The autostereoscopic optical apparatus 10 includes a left image to be viewed by an observer 12 at a left viewing pupil 141 and a right image to be viewed by the observer with a right viewing pupil 14r. Further, the autostereoscopic optical apparatus 10 comprises a left-image generation system which forms a left 2-dimensional intermediate image 761 and a right-image generation system which forms a right 2-dimensional intermediate image 76r, a curved mirror 24 with a center of curvature which is arranged optically in the middle between a scanning ball lens assembly 1001 for the left-image generation system and a scanning ball lens assembly 100r for the right-image generation system, and a beam splitter 16 which is so arranged as to form a left 2-dimensional intermediate image nearby the front focal plane of the curved mirror 24 by folding the optical path from the left-image generation system and to form a right 2-dimensional intermediate image nearby the front focal plane of the curved mirror 24 by folding the optical system from the right-image generation system.

    • A monocentric arrangement of optical components providing stereoscopic display of a virtual image, electronically generated, line by line, from a linear image source (36) and projected, as a real intermediate image, near the focal surface (22) of a curved mirror (24) by means of a scanning ball lens assembly (100). To form each left and right intermediate image component, a separate image generation system (70) comprises a scanning ball lens assembly (100) comprising a spherical lens (46) for wide field of view and a reflective surface (102). A monocentric arrangement of optical components images the left and right scanning ball lens pupil at the corresponding left and right viewing pupil (14) of the observer (12) and essentially provides a single center of curvature for projection components. Use of such a monocentric arrangement with linear image source (36) and scanning ball lens assemblies (100) provides an exceptionally wide field of view with large viewing pupil (14).
