    • A drill bit including a bit body and a plurality of blades formed in the bit body. The blades are formed, at least in part, from a base matrix material that on one embodiment is impregnated with abrasive particles. One side of the bit is formed, with respect to its axis of rotation, to a smaller radius than the opposite side of the bit. The asymmetry of the bit enables the bit to drill a larger diameter hole than a pass through diameter of the bit. The opposite side defines a contact angle between the bit and a formation. In one embodiment, the contact angle is at least 140 degrees. In one embodiment, a plurality of inserts may be located on the blades to provide gage protection. In another embodiment, the bit may also include a gage sleeve that helps keep the bit stabilized in the wellbore.

    • A drill bit comprises a main body part having a shank for connection to a drill string, an end face, an internal passage for supplying drilling fluid to the end face, a number of blades extending from the end face outwardly and longitudinally of the central axis of rotation of the bit, and a number of cutters mounted on each said blade. Each blade comprises a central metal core at least partly surrounded by solid infiltrated matrix material. A method of manufacturing such a drill bit includes the steps of forming a main body part from metal, applying to the outer surface of the main body part a coating layer of wax which liquefies at elevated temperature, applying to the coated body part mold-forming material to provide a self-supporting mold surrounding the coated body part, and raising the temperature of the body and surrounding mold sufficiently to liquefy the coating material. The liquefied coating is then drained from the mold, and the cavities left by the coating material are packed with powdered matrix material, which is then infiltrated with a binder alloy at elevated temperature to form a solid infiltrated matrix layer, on the bit body part, corresponding to the layer of wax previously applied.

    • An improved polycrystalline diamond composite ("PDC") cutter comprising a single or a plurality of secondary PDC cutting surfaces in addition to a primary PDC cutting surface, wherein at least two of the cutting surfaces are non-abutting, resulting in enhanced cutter efficiency and useful life. The primary PDC cutting surface is a PDC layer on one end face of the cutter. The secondary PDC cutting surfaces are formed by sintering and compacting polycrystalline diamond in grooves formed on the cutter body outer surface. The secondary cutting surfaces can have different shapes such as circles, triangles, rectangles, crosses, finger-like shapes, or rings.
