    • A fingerprint sensor includes an array of fingerprint sensing elements; analog-to-digital (A/D) converters having a controllable range; a scanner to perform sequential A/D conversions of predetermined ones of the array of fingerprint sensing elements; and a range determining and setting circuit for controlling the range of the A/D converters based upon prior A/D conversions to thereby provide enhanced conversion resolution. A plurality of A/D converters are preferably used for simultaneously converting analog signals from a corresponding plurality of fingerprint sensing elements. The A/D converters may include at least one reference voltage input for permitting setting of first and second points of the range. The range scale determining and setting circuit may generate a histogram based upon prior A/D conversions. In addition, the range scale determining and setting circuit may set a default range for initial ones of the fingerprint sensing elements.

    • A fingerprint sensor includes a plurality of semiconductor devices adjacent a substrate and defining active circuit portions, and having only three metal layers. More particularly, the sensor may include a first metal layer interconnecting predetermined ones of the plurality of semiconductor devices; a second metal layer defining a ground plane; and a third metal layer comprising an array of electric field sensing electrodes connected to active circuit portions for generating an output related to a sensed fingerprint. The fingerprint sensor may also include a package surrounding the substrate and having an opening aligned with the sensing electrodes. In addition, a first external electrode may be carried by the package for contact by a finger. The sensor may thus also include an excitation drive circuit connected between the ground plane and the first external electrode for generating electric fields between the electric field sensing electrodes and adjacent finger portions. A power control circuit is for controlling operation of active circuit portions based upon sensing finger contact with the first external electrode so that the active circuit portions are powered upon sensing finger contact with the first external electrode and otherwise grounded. A second external electrode may be connected to a bleed resistor to bleed charge from the finger prior to switching from the grounded to the powered state. An amplifier connected between each electric field sensing electrode and associated shield electrode may be operated at a gain of greater than one for additional noise rejection.

    • A fingerprint sensor package preferably includes a fingerprint sensing integrated circuit in a housing, and a circuit substrate comprising first and second portions connected together. The first portion is within the housing and mounts the fingerprint sensing integrated circuit, and the second portion is flexible and extends outwardly from the housing for facilitating electrical connection to the fingerprint sensing integrated circuit from external to the housing. Each portion of the circuit substrate preferably includes at least one insulating layer and at least one electrical conductor thereon. Accordingly, the package can be made relatively compact and electrical interconnections are facilitated by the second portion or extension of the circuit substrate. In one embodiment, the first and second portions are integrally formed together. In this embodiment, the first portion is also flexible. The sensor package is readily included on the upper surface of a laptop computer, for example.

The at least one external electrode may include first and second external electrodes. The first electrode may be connected to the electrostatic discharge circuit. The processing circuit may further comprise a wake-up circuit for selectively powering predetermined circuit portions responsive to sensing finger contact with the second external electrode. Moreover, the housing may define a recess therein to guide a finger of a user along a predetermined path of travel to contact the first external electrode before the second external electrode.

    • A fingerprint and token sensor system includes an array of fingerprint sensing elements for generating signals related to a fingerprint based upon a finger being positioned adjacent the sensing elements, and a token for also causing the sensing elements to generate signals related to a token message based upon the token being positioned adjacent the sensing elements. Accordingly, the single sensor may be used for both fingerprints and for reading data from a token for range of useful purposes. Each fingerprint sensing element may preferably include an electric field sensing electrode, and a shield associated with a respective electric field sensing electrode. A drive circuit may be connected to the array of electric field sensing electrodes for driving same. The sensor is preferably in the form of an integrated circuit and includes a substrate adjacent the array of fingerprint sensing elements. The token may include an array of electrically conductive elements, a pattern defined by different dielectric values, or electric field generating elements cooperating with the array of electric field sensing electrodes. The elements may be carried on a card, for example. The data message of the token may include further information related to the identity of the token bearer, for example, or may confirm the proper identity of the bearer based upon a match with the live fingerprint of the bearer. Alternately, the token could bypass the requirement for a live fingerprint.

    • An access control system includes a fingerprint enrolling station for sensing a fingerprint of a person and enrolling the person as an authorized person based upon the sensed fingerprint. The system also includes an access triggering device to be carried by the authorized person, and an access controller for granting access to an authorized person bearing the access triggering device. The access triggering device preferably cooperates with the enrolling station to store authorization data for an authorized person based upon the sensed fingerprint. The access triggering device also preferably includes a wireless transmitter, such as a passive transponder, for transmitting an authorization signal related to the stored authorization data. In addition, the access controller preferably includes a wireless receiver, such as including a transponder powering circuit, for receiving the authorization signal and granting access responsive to the wireless transmitter being in proximity to the wireless receiver. The authorized person bearing the access trigger device may unobtrusively be granted access merely by approaching the access location.
