    • An apparatus for selectively inverting an external magnetic field in a magneto-optic recording system so that information can be selectively recorded on or erased from a magneto-optic recording element of the system moving through said field, the apparatus comprises a permanent magnet having its north and south poles oriented along its cross-sectional dimension. A core having a shape which is adaptable to selectively impart a predetermined magnetic field to the permanent magnet for rotating the permanent magnet, which directs a flux generated by the predetermined magnetic field for reducing electro-magnetic interference, and which defines a preferential orientation of the magnet for selectively maintaining the magnet in the preferential orientation.

    • Apparatus for thermal printing of a color image includes a donor member that contains a set of color stripes for each pixel in a repeating pattern in the cross-scan direction and in continuous stripes in the page scan direction. As the printing beam is scanned across the donor, it addresses the sequence of color dyes and if the beam is of sufficient intensity at any one of the color stripes; it causes the dye to transfer to the receiver material. To compensate for variations in the scan rate of the beam, light reflected from the donor member is used to form color timing signals that correspond to the color stripes of the pattern scanned by the beam. The timing signals align the modulation of the beam to the color stripe pattern of the donor member whereby accurate color registration is obtained.

    • Disclosed herein is a piezoelectric flexure device in which the piezoelectric element(s) thereof comprises a flexible piezoelectric layer (e.g. a suitably polarized polymeric film) which is tightly wound about an axis to produce a plurality of substantially concentric layers of piezoelectric material. Positioned between adjacent piezoelectric layers are conductive layers which function as electrodes for either applying an electric field across the piezoelectric layers to cause the device to flex, or for detecting the electrical potential produced in the device as a result of subjecting the piezoelectric element to a mechanical stress. Owing to the wound nature of the piezoelectric element, the device is relatively simple to manufacture and the conductive layers are less apt to crack or break during the manufacturing process. Also disclosed herein are techniques for producing such piezoelectric flexure devices.
