    • Fuel injectors and methods of fuel injection allowing direct control of the flow of fuel at an intensified pressure to the needle. A valve, typically a spool valve, is placed in the fuel passage between the intensifier actuation piston and the needle, and controlled by a control valve which may be independent of the control valve controlling the coupling of actuation fluid and a vent to the intensifier actuation piston. This allows achievement of intensification before initiating injection, and control of multiple injections in a single injection event while maintaining fuel intensification throughout the duration of the injection event. Various embodiments are disclosed, including embodiments having multiple intensifiers, having control of pressure over the needle, having two stage control valve systems for control of intensifier actuation fluid, and combining control of one of the intensifiers and the valve controlling flow of intensified fuel to the needle for injection.

    • An internal combustion engine that contains a controller which controls different components such as a fuel injector, an exhaust valve and a by-pass valve of a pump with digital control signals. The engine may have an hydraulically driven fuel injector which ejects a volume of fuel into an internal combustion chamber. The flow of air into the internal combustion chamber and the flow of exhaust gas out of the chamber may be controlled by camless hydraulically driven intake and exhaust valves. The hydraulic actuation of the fuel injector and valves are controlled by solenoid actuated latching fluid control valves. The operation of the injector and the valves is controlled by a controller which provides digital signals to actuate and latch the solenoid control valves. The digital signals consume minimal power and actuate the valves at relatively high speeds. The engine further contains a pump that pumps the hydraulic fluid to the control valves. The pump system contains an hydraulically driven solenoid actuated latching by-pass valve which can be opened to couple the outlet of the pump with a return line. Latching the by-pass valve into an open position allows the output of the pump to be dumped to the return line without requiring additional work from the pump to maintain the by-pass valve in the open position. The by-pass valve can be opened by a digital control signal from the controller. The controller can open and close the by-pass valve to control the rail pressure provided to the control valves.

    • A three position digitally latched actuator actuated fluid control valve. The control valve includes a housing which has a cylinder port, a supply port and a return port. The control valve also contains an internal valve that moves between a first position, a second position and a neutral position. In the first position the internal valve provides fluid communication between the cylinder port and the supply port. In the second position the valve provides fluid communication between the cylinder port and the return port. In the neutral position the valve prevents fluid communication between the ports. The control valve has a first actuator and a second actuator that are actuated by digital pulses to move the internal valve between the first, second and neutral positions. The control valve may have a pair of springs that bias the internal valve to the neutral position, wherein the actuator can be actuated to latch the valve into the first position and the second actuator can be actuated to latch the valve into the second position.

    • The present invention is a fuel injection system having one or more fuel injectors and an electronic control system therefore. The preferred fuel injector has a double magnetic latching solenoid three-way or four-way spool valve that controls the flow of a working fluid that is used to control the discharge of fuel into the combustion chamber or intake manifold of an engine through the nozzle of the injector. The control system provides actuating current pulses to each of the solenoids to actuate and latch the solenoids to effect initiation and termination of the injection. Disclosed are control systems that provide a snap action in one or both actuating directions of the valve by electromagnetically retaining the valve in the latched condition until the force in the actuated solenoid builds to a high level, and then releasing the valve for higher acceleration to the actuated position. Also disclosed is an exemplary control system that senses the arrival of valve at the actuated position so that the actuating current pulse can be terminated as soon as possible so as to allow a strong current pulse drive, but of low total energy, for fast actuation of a relatively small valve. Other embodiments, features and uses of the invention are disclosed.

    • A hydraulic system with control valves that can control the movement of an actuator. The system has a first control valve and a second control valve that each contain solenoids that can switch the valves between open and closed positions. The valves are connected to a digital controller that can energize the solenoids. The controller controls the sequence of energizing such that when the first valve is opened the second valve is closed, and when the second valve is opened the first valve is closed. The valves are connected to the actuator so that the actuator moves in first direction when the first valve is opened and in a second opposite direction when the second valve is opened. The valves have an internal pressure balance that allows the solenoids to quickly switch into the open position using minimal power. The solenoids also have magnets that maintain the valves in the open position when power is terminated.

    • A high speed solenoid valve that has a housing with an inlet and outlet that are typically connected to a pneumatic system to control the flow of air across the valve. The solenoid has a first magnetic core coaxial with an armature. Wrapped around the first core is a coil that is connected to a source of power. The coil emits a magnetic flux when current flows through the coil. Adjacent to the coil is a second magnetic core that is attached at one end to the first core and spaced from the opposite end of the first core by a first bushing. Attached to the armature is a magnetic plate that is adjacent to the spaced apart ends of the first and second cores. When the coil is energized, the magnetic flux flows through the magnetic cores and plate, pulling the plate toward the cores and moving the armature from a first to a second position. The solenoid valve has a rod that is adjacent to the armature, such that the rod is moved from a first position to a second position by the armature, when the plate is pulled by the magnetic field of the coil. A spring is attached to the rod to push the rod and armature into the first position when the coil is deenergized. The rod has a first spool at one end which is seated on a second bushing, such that the first spool prevents fluid communication between the housing inlet and outlet when the rod is in the first position. When the coil is energized and the rod is moved into the second position, the first spool is unseated from the second bushing to allow air to flow through the valve.

    • A battery operated fluid control system, which may be used in a sprinkler stem having a master valve unit with a battery operated electronic clock therein for periodically opening the valve for a preset duration in response to the clock turn-on pulse, and being operable with one or more slave valve units connected in series to sequentially open the slave valves for their corresponding preset time duration. The clock is comprised of an oscillator having a plurality of countdown flip-flops, with the clock turn-on pulse being selectable from the outputs of a group of the lower flip-flops to give a selection of valve turn-on intervals. A battery operated solenoid valve of the latching type and associated circuitry is located in the master valve unit and each of the slave valve units, with the circuitry being adapted to receive a pulse, either from the clock or from the turn-off signal of the previous valve unit, and to provide a turn-on pulse to the solenoid. The circuitry is also comprised of an adjustable time delay circuit to measure the desired duration from the turn-on pulse and to provide a subsequent turn-off pulse to the solenoid. One embodiment is adapted to replace the valve mechanism in a prior art anti-syphon valve assembly. Another embodiment incorporates a unique anti-syphon valve which does not obstruct the primary flow path and further has a moisture collecting container on the side thereof, cooperatively disposed with the anti-syphon valve and having electrical probes therein connected to the circuitry. When the valve turns on, the initial leakage of the anti-syphon valve fills the container, which will remain filled in rainy or very himid weather, thereby preventing subsequent opening of the valve until the moisture has evaporated. The valve and time delay circuit is also adaptable for use in manually initiated systems, such as toilets and the like, and a unique toilet bowl and water valve component arrangement is disclosed to achieve the anti-syphon function.
