摘要： A method of smoothing the surface of an article made by additive layer manufacturing in an inert environment, placing the article in a reactive environment where a compound forms a layer on a surface of the article and then removing this layer. The reactive environment can be oxidising, nitriding, carburising, sulfurising, boriding, chloriding or fluoriding. The reaction of the articles surface can be performed while heat treating, e.g. for stress relief, solution heat treatment or ageing. Reaction of parts of the articles surface can be prevented by masking. The layer can be removed by electro-polishing using the ionic liquid choline chloride. After smoothing the article its surface can be passiviated. The method can be used on articles such as fin heat exchangers, fuel nozzles and parts with complex internal channels and the articles can be made of nickel, iron, titanium or cobalt alloys.
