    • An apparatus operable to record a spatially low-frequency heterodyne hologram including spatially heterodyne fringes for Fourier analysis includes: a laser; a beamsplitter optically coupled to the laser; an object optically coupled to the beamsplitter: a focusing lens optically coupled to both the beamsplitter and the object; a digital recorder optically coupled to the focusing lens; and a computer that performs a Fourier transform, applies a digital filter, and performs an inverse Fourier transform. A reference beam and an object beam are focused by the focusing lens at a focal plane of the digital recorder to form a spatially low-frequency heterodyne hologram including spatially heterodyne fringes for Fourier analysis which is recorded by the digital recorder, and the computer transforms the recorded spatially low-frequency heterodyne hologram including spatially heterodyne fringes and shifts axes in Fourier space to sit on top of a heterodyne carrier frequency defined by an angle between the reference beam and the object beam and cuts off signals around an original origin before performing the inverse Fourier transform.

    • Systems and methods for shearless digital hologram acquisition, including an apparatus incorporating an illumination source configured to produce a first beam of light, which is then split by a beamsplitter into a reference beam and an object illumination beam. The reference beam is directed onto a phase-shaping optical element which imparts a phase shift to the reference beam and returns the phase-shifted reference beam on itself to the beamsplitter. The object illumination beam is directed onto an object, and a portion of the beam is reflected back to the beamsplitter, which combines the phase-shifted reference beam and object illumination beam substantially coaxially. The combined beams are passed through a focusing lens which focuses them at a focal plane. A digital recorder is positioned at the focal plane to record the spatially heterodyne hologram formed by the focused phase-shifted reference beam and reflected object illumination beam.

    • Methods and apparatus are described for large substrate flat panel inspection systems. A method includes inspecting an object using a machine that includes an imaging device having an electronic shutter: scanning the imaging device across a surface of the object between a first location and a second location; strobing at least one light emitting diode to illuminate the object between the first location and the second location; and synchronizing operation of the electronic shutter with the strobed at least one light emitting diode, wherein i) strobing the at least one light emitting diode includes firing the at least one light emitting diode using at least one index mark located on the machine and ii) scanning includes continuously moving the imaging device between the first location and the second location. An apparatus includes an inspection machine including: an imaging device having an electronic shutter; and at least one light emitting diode coupled to the imaging device, wherein i) the at least one light emitting diode is strobed by firing the at least one light emitting diode using at least one index mark located on the inspection machine while moving the imaging device continuously between a first location and a second location and ii) operation of the electronic shutter is synchronized with strobing of the at least one light emitting diode.

A method includes making a reticle particle calibration standard including depositing a solution that includes a plurality of particles onto a first plate; drying the solution to evaporate a solvent; bonding the plurality of particles to the first plate; coupling a second plate to the first plate, the plurality of particles located between the first plate and the second plate, wherein the plurality of particles include a plurality of traceable standard particles of substantially known shape and size. A method includes using a reticle particle calibration standard to qualify a metrology instrument or monitor performance of the metrology instrument including: scanning the reticle particle calibration standard using the metrology instrument; compiling a raw data map of the reticle particle calibration standard; comparing the raw data map to a calibration data map associated with the reticle particle calibration standard.
