摘要： The disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass having antimicrobial properties and to a method of making such glass. In particular, the disclosure is directed to a chemically strengthened glass with antimicrobial properties and with a low surface energy coating on the glass that does not interfere with the antimicrobial properties of the glass. The antimicrobial has an Ag ion concentration on the surface in the range of greater than zero to 0.047 µg/cm2. The glass has particular applications as antimicrobial shelving, table tops and other applications in hospitals, laboratories and other institutions handling biological substances, where color in the glass is not a consideration.

摘要： The present invention provides methods of generating short wavelength radiation, methods of transporting short wavelength radiation, and apparati used in these methods. One embodiment of the invention provides a method of transporting short wavelength radiation using a photonic band gap fiber. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method of transporting short wavelength radiation using a bundle of photonic band gap fibers. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method of generating ultraviolet radiation using high harmonic generation by pumping a noble gas-filled photonic band gap fiber with a pulsed laser source.

摘要： Methods of fabricating dimensional silica-based substrates or structures comprising a porous silicon layers are contemplated. According to one embodiment, oxygen is extracted from the atomic elemental composition of a silica glass substrate by reacting a metallic gas with the substrate in a heated inert atmosphere to form a metal-oxygen complex along a surface of the substrate. The metal-oxygen complex is removed from the surface of the silica glass substrate to yield a crystalline porous silicon surface portion and one or more additional layers are formed over the crystalline porous silicon surface portion of the silica glass substrate to yield a dimensional silica-based substrate or structure comprising the porous silicon layer. Embodiments are also contemplated where the substrate is glass-based, but is not necessarily a silica-based glass substrate. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

In one embodiment, the lens array includes a one-dimensional array of useful lenses and two sacrificial lenses each of which is formed next to an end of a row of the useful lenses to help maintain relatively uniform sag heights across the useful lenses. In another embodiment, the lens array includes a two-dimensional array of useful lenses and a plurality of perimeter lenses each of which is formed next to an end of a row or a column of the useful lenses to help maintain relatively uniform sag heights across the useful lenses. In yet another embodiment, the lens array includes an array of useful lenses and a glass region (including possibly a glass matrix) located within an opal border and outside an opal region that surrounds the useful lenses to help minimize warpage of the lens array. In fact, there are many different embodiments of the lens array described herein that incorporate one or more of the aforementioned features.

摘要： The disclosure is directed to glass frits materials containing phosphors that can be used in LED lighting devices and for methods associated therewith for making the phosphor containing frit materials. Suitable non-lead glasses have a composition, in mol%, in the range of 20-24% K20, 8-12% ZnO, 2-6% A1203, 35-41% 3203 and 22-28 Si02. Suitable leaded glasses have a composition, in mol%, in range of 72-79% PbO, 8-13% A1203, 8-13% B203, 2-5% Si02 and 0-0.3% Sb203. Commercial high-lead glass can be used in practicing the disclosure. Among the unique advantages are the ability to blend two or more phosphors within the same frit layer which will yield a multi -phosphor- containing glass after firing; the ability to deposit the phosphor onto a substrate into a desired geometric pattern; and the fluorescing layer can be applied to the active plane, with the glass serving as protective substrate.

摘要： A magnetic photonic crystal for providing asymmetry of spatial frequencies in the propagation of light is provided. The crystal is formed from at least two materials having different indices of refraction which are aligned along the longitudinal axis of the crystal. And arranged in an array whose symmetry does not include a spatial inversion operator such that (x,y) =/= (-x,-y). One or more of the materials forming the array is magnetic such that the magnetic group representation of the array does not include time inversion as a symmetric operator. In operation, when the magnetic material forming the material is magnetized, the group velocity property of light propagated in one direction along the axis of the array is different from the group velocity property of light transmitted in an opposite direction through the array. The magnetic photonic crystal may be used, for example, as an optical memory device or a high speed modulator/demodulator.

摘要： Disclosed is a photonic band-gap crystal waveguide having the physical dimension of the photonic crystal lattice and the size of the defect selected to provide for optimum mode power confinement to the defect. The defect has a boundary which has a characteristic numerical value associated with it. The ratio of this numerical value to the pitch of the photonic crystal is selected to avoid surface modes found to exist in certain configurations of the photonic band-gap crystal waveguide. Embodiments in accord with the invention having circular and hexagonal defect cross sections are disclosed and described. A method of making the photonic band-gap crystal waveguide is also disclosed and described.
