    • The present invention is a method for the production of biofuel. The method includes providing a renewable, photosynthetically-produced biological material having at least one biofuel precursor and a cell-wall component. The photosynthetically-produced biological material is fractionated into at least two fractions, a first fraction enriched in the biofuel precursor and a second fraction enriched in the cell-wall component. The method includes the step of processing at least one of the second fraction and a product of its modification to generate thermal energy and further includes the step of processing at least one of said first fraction, a product if its modification, and a component of the first fraction to generate at least one biofuel. Processing of the first fraction includes at least one energy-consuming operation that consumes energy resulting from processing the second fraction.

    • A method for the production of a protein-containing substance is disclosed. The method includes providing a starting material comprising a protein, a sugar and a phytate. The method also includes extracting with a solvent at least a fraction of the sugar and at least a fraction of the phytate from the starting material to form at least one purified proteinous material and at least one extract. The method includes separating the at least one purified proteinous material from the at least one extract to form a separated purified proteinous material and a separated extract. The method includes incorporating the separated purified proteinous material in at least one product. The solvent comprises at least one of water and aqueous solutions. The pH of the solvent during at least part of the extraction differs from pI by at least about 0.2 pH units, wherein pI is the isoelectric point of the protein. A food comprising a protein-containing substance derived from a starting material having protein and phytate, the food comprising at least about 70 percent of the protein of the starting material and less than about 60 percent of the phytate of the starting material is also disclosed.

    • The invention provides a method for the enhanced production of algal biomass with accompanying improved sequestration of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, comprising the steps of b) providing a gaseous CO 2 source; b) contacting the source with water and with a basic compound, whereby a CO 2 product is generated, which CO 2 product comprises at least one CO 2 component, and optionally converting the CO2 product to a different CO 2 product; c) forming a medium comprising algae and at least one CO 2 product in which medium the generation of algal biomass for harvesting is enhanced as a function of the availability of the product; and d) harvesting generated algal biomass, whereby the algal biomass comprises carbon atoms of the CO2 product.

    • A method for preparing a heat-treated food from a raw ingredient derived from a plant material and containing asparagine and at least one reducing sugar is disclosed. The method includes contacting with the raw ingredient a reagent comprising an amino acid having a relatively low asparagine concentration so that a coating layer is formed.
