    • An apparatus for inflating a vehicle occupant restraint such as an air bag comprises a source of gas for inflating the vehicle occupant restraint, a housing for mounting to the vehicle, and means connecting the gas source to the housing. The housing has passages to enable aspiration of ambient air into the vehicle occupant restraint. An aspiration flap disposed within the housing has a first position closing the passages and a second position enabling flow of ambient air through the passages. The aspiration flap and the housing have interengaging portions for blocking movement of the aspiration flap out of the housing.

    • Apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle (12) which has a side structure (16) and a roof (18) comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14). The inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) is inflatable away from the vehicle roof (18) into a position between the side structure (16) of the vehicle (12) and a vehicle occupant. An inflation fluid source (24) provides inflation fluid for inflating the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14). The inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) comprises a pair of overlying panels (40, 42) having overlapping portions that are secured together at points of connection (60). First and second points of connection (70, 72) are spaced vertically apart from each other and positioned along a first straight line (74) that extends between the first and second points of connection. Third and fourth points of connection (80, 82) are spaced horizontally apart from each other and positioned along a second straight line (84) that extends between the third and fourth points of connection. The second straight line (84) extends transverse to the first straight line (74).

    • An inflatable air bag (10, 10a) inflates to restrain a vehicle occupant (13) during a vehicle collision. The air bag has an opening (16, 16a) for venting gas from the interior space (14, 14a) of the air bag. A panel (20, 20a) overlies the opening in the air bag and is secured with, preferably, stitches (22, 22a) to the air bag. The stitches may extend in a generally U-shape along only a portion of the perimeter around the opening in the air bag. Alternatively, the stitches may extend along the entire perimeter around the opening in the air bag. When gas is vented from the interior space of the air bag through the opening in the air bag, the panel restricts flow of the vented gas rearwardly in the vehicle toward the occupant and directs the vented gas forwardly in the vehicle away from the occupant.
