    • The invention concerns a vehicle door of modular construction of the type described in the preamble of claim 1. It comprises a basic door body which is completed by the addition of a support plate for component sets and a one- or multiple piece door inner lining. The vehicle door (1) according to the invention consists of a two-shell basic door body with an outer door panel and an inner door panel, the two panels being connected along the edge region; the inner panel is provided with a recess which is largely covered by a support plate (3) on which are mounted functional units such as window opening/closing mechanisms, locks, cable trunks or the like. The vehicle door further comprises a lining element which closes the door off on the inside of the vehicle. The door is characterised by the fact that at least part of the lining element (5a, 5b) is joined before assembly to the support plate (3). A covering frame covers the connection points between the lining element (5a, 5b) and support plate (3) and of the inner panel and support plate (3).
