A sensor auxiliary quantity of the sensor element and/or at least one threshold value of the evaluation electronics can be switched during the test mode. A sensor auxiliary quantity is, for example, a Hall current. A threshold value is compared with a measurement signal by an analog or digital comparator. A sensitivity of the device is characterized by an amplitude of a measured quantity of the sensor element and by the threshold value of the evaluation electronics. For testing purposes in the test mode, the sensitivity is reduced to a level below that which is used in an operating mode.
