    • 1323077 Casting processes BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 10 Nov 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 61026/69 Heading B3F A method of bottom casting in which molten metal is poured into an upstanding runner 7 which forms part of a runner system 6 communicating with the lower end of an ingot mould 1, is characterized in that, after the metal has been poured into the runner 7 to enter the mould, a fluid under pressure is applied to the metal in the runner to displace at least some of the metal remaining in the runner system into the mould. The metal displaced into the mould by the fluid pressure may be used to compensate for the shrinkage occurring on solidification or it may be used to bring the molten metal level in the mould up to the desired level. In either case, it may be held in contact with a cast iron plug 29 in the top of the mould. The crossrunner 8 may be horizontal, slope down towards the base of the mould, or have a U-shaped bend in it. The upstanding runner 7 is formed of sleeves 27 of refractory material surrounded by a pressure tight metal tube 10, the space between these components being filled with packing material 28 such as fire brick waste or sand. After pouring, the top of the runner 7 is sealed by a hinged cover 13 having an inlet for compressed gas.
