    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the formation of an undesired polymer substantially or to inhibit its formation perfectly and to thereby to produce a polymer product having a small polydispersity index by introducing an electron donor into a position higher than the level of the liquid in the reactor to minimize the reaction of isobutene with free boron trifluoride gas in the condenser. SOLUTION: An electron donor (e.g. an alcohol) in the form of droplets or a vapor is introduced into the reactor in an arbitrary position higher than the level of the reaction liquid in the reactor. In order to inhibit the formation of an undesired polymer, the electron donor in an amount of at least 3 mol per mol of free boron trifluoride vapor preestimated to form in the condenser or the connecting pipes is added to a position higher than the level of the liquid in the reactor. The reaction is practiced at -40 to +40 deg.C in a boiling liquid. The pressure in the reactor is desirabJy 0.2-4.0 bar. This process is suitable for the production of a polyisobutene having a number-average molecular weight of 350-5,000. The molecular weight distribution in this case is in the range of 1.2-2.5.
