    • This invention is a ureteral stent (100) for assisting movement of urine along a patient's ureter and into the patient's bladder. The stent (100) includes an elongated tubular segment (130) extending toward the bladder from a kidney end region for placement in the renal cavity to a bladder end region. A central lumen (260) connects at least one opening (127) at the first end region to at least one opening in the bladder end region. At least one flexible tail (110) is attached to the bladder end region of the tubular segment (130) at a point outside the bladder so as to receive urine from the opening in the bladder end region of the tubular segment (130) and to transport urine from there across the ureter/bladder junction and into the bladder. The tail (110) includes an elongated external urine transport surface sized and configured to transport urine along the ureter. The urine transporting surface is sized and configured to extend along at least part of the ureter, across the ureter/bladder junction, and from there into the bladder.

    • A catheter for diagnosing body interiors utilizing the transmission and receiving of ultrasonic waves. The catheter has a patient insertable distal end (16) and a proximal end (20) and comprises an elongated catheter sheath including an ultrasonically transmissible section (13) adjacent the distal end. It further includes a reservoir disposed within the sheath and adjacent the distal end. A frangible membrane (15) is disposed within the sheath and seals the reservoir from the interior of the sheath. A liquid (12) is disposed within the reservoir and contained therein by the frangible membrane. A transducer (11) for generating and receiving the ultrasonic waves is used to break the membrane when it is slipped into the sheath so the transducer will be bathed in the liquid and provide sonic transmissions within the catheter.

    • An apparatus (10) and a method for managing polyps by which an elongated tubular member (11) generally positionable within a working channel of an endoscopic device. The tubular member (11) carries a selectively extendable severing device (13) and capturing device (14) at its distal end (12). Slide member (17) at the proximal end (16) of the tubular member (11) enables a physician to extend and retract the severing and capturing devices (13, 14). The physician retracts the capturing device (14) to grasp the portion of the polyp to be severed and retracts the severing device (13) to sever the polyp. The capturing device (14) retains the severed portion of the polyp for removal with the tubular member (11). In one of the embodiments the capturing device (14) includes an injection needle (71A).

    • A guidewire (10) adapted to be inserted into a vascular vessel or into a catheter that is to be inserted into a vascular vessel or the like. The guidewire comprises a coil of flexible radiotransparent wire having a proximal section (11) and a distal section (12). The proximal section (11) is formed of a coil of wire having abutting turns and distal section is formed by the same coil of wire with the turns of wire being spaced from each other. A layer of radiopaque material of predetermined length is disposed in a predetermined location on the distal section, the interior of the layer being interstitially disposed within the outer surface of the coil. A hemispherical tip (15) is disposed at the distal end of the distal section (12). A small braze (14) is made at the juncture between the proximal section and the distal section to prevent spreading of the coils from the abutting relationship in the proximal end of said guidewire.
