摘要： The invention relates to a method for detecting malfunctioning in a sensor which detects a measured variable. A signal range check is carried out for the output signal of the sensor when the measured variable is situated within a permissible range. Said check is not carried out, however, the output signal is used for detecting the measured variable and for further calculation when the measured variable is situated outside said permissible range. The sensor is a hot film air mass sensor (HFM) in a motor for instance. In this case, the measured variable is the intake air mass and the signal range check is only carried out when the operating state of the motor and thus the intake air mass fulfil conditions that can be pre-determined. In addition to the signal range check, onboard diagnoses are carried out with regard to plausibility criteria. Said diagnoses relate to the offset drift and/or the sensitivity drift of the sensor.

A processor 5 is which connected to the back end of an analog/digital converter 4 controls a transistor switch 6. The transistor switch 6 supplies a trigger signal, positive operation voltage, for example, to the output side line 3. Since the output current of an operational amplifier 10 which is connected to the back end of a sensor element 9 is limited, a comparator 7 can identify the trigger signal and therefore the comparator 7 starts a test unit based on the signal. A test signal conducted to the sensor output side in a test phase can evaluate whether disconnection or shorting occurs or not in the evaluation unit 2.

SOLUTION: A pressure sensor 110 detects pressure in a rail 112. In this pressure sensor 110, an inspection is executed whether a sensor characteristic curvature has offset error or not. In a predetermined operating condition, a pressure signal is compared with an expected value, and the pressure signal including error is discriminated depending on the comparison. The inspection is performed in an operating condition in which fuel is completely released in the rail 112. Pressure generated in this condition is already known, and a metering member applied on pressure is controlled so as to generate pressure as small as possible. In this time, in the case where the pressure signal which is remarkably larger than the expected value is received, a device discriminates offset error. It is thus possible to surely discriminate change of the sensor characteristic curvature, and it is also possible to meter fuel correctly.

SOLUTION: This device is provided with a sensor 177 for detecting the pressure in a rail 135 to which high pressure fuel is supplied by a high pressure pump 145 and for sending a corresponding signal to a control device 170 and a sensor 180 for forming an exhaust signal Z(k) featuring the component of the exhaust in an exhaust pipe 110. The control device 170 determines a difference ZA between a previous value Z(k) and a new value Z(kf1) after a specified waiting time elapses and judges whether the difference ZA is larger than a threshold value SA or not. If the judgment is NO, the previous value Z(k) is replaced by the new value Z(k+1) and, if the judgment is YES, an error is detected. When the error is detected, it is judged that a fuel amount ad justing device has a trouble and the compensation functions of both devices are started.
