    • To convert the duration of single sequentially occurring pulses to proportional continuous current characteristic, for example voltage or current, a capacitor is charged by a constant current during the duration of the pulse, and condenser charge measured; to permit use of components in the circuit at operating points of their operating characteristics which exhibit sharp bends, rather than gradual transition, the charging of the condenser is delayed by a predetermined time period with respect to the start of the pulse to be measured, and, the capacitor is maintained at a predetermined initial charge corresponding to the charge which would otherwise accumulate during the delay period. Two capacitors, in two alternately activated channels are used to permit partial discharging, and recharging to a reciprocative level of one capacitor, while the other holds its previous charge for continuous indication of pulse length of the previous pulse.

    • A pulse generator provides a pulse train representative of angular position of the engine crankshaft, and a marker pulse, at a predetermined angular crankshaft position. A counter is connected to the train of pulses, to start counting upon occurrence of the marker pulses. A digital/analog converter converts the binary count numbers into an analog signal, which is compared with engine operation signals representative of spark advance or retardation, the comparator providing an output when the count derived from the counter and the operation parameter control signals match. The engine operation control signal may be a composite of signals commanding spark advance or spark retardation, such as speed signals, load signals or other operating parameter signals, applied to the comparator as varying voltages or currents.

    • A pulse generator rotating synchronously with the crank shaft of the engine feeds pulses to a bistable multivibrator, the output of which is conductive to an integrator through a monostable multivibrator. The integrator output is fed to a further pulse generator for generating pulses of variable keying ratio independent of engine speed, the further pulse generator comprising an impedance convertor, a storage capacitor, and a voltage-time transducer. This arrangement operates one valve of one cylinder of the engine. Additional valves can be operated by two further pulse generators for each valve, the output of the first of the two additional pulse generators being used to deliver the pulses for the second of the two further pulse generators so as to prevent simultaneous operation of the inlet and outlet valves.

    • To provide proper allocation of fuel injected under electronic control, a sequence of electrical pulses, controlled by rotation of the engine are provided, the passage opening electromagnetic valves through which fuel can be injected. A signalling circuit which is inductively or capacitively coupled to an ignition wire provides a signal synchronized with ignition pulses, this signal being coupled to an electronic counter which steps in synchronism with the ignition pulses and the output counts of which control application of the valve pulses to the respective fuel injection valve associated with the cylinders of the internal combustion engine.
