    • An engine assembly (10) includes a valve assembly (16) which selectively enables exhaust gas to be recirculated from an engine exhaust outlet (14) to an engine air inlet (12). The valve assembly (16) is positionable between a first valve position and a second valve position. The engine exhaust outlet (14) is isolated from the engine air inlet (12) when the valve assembly (16) is positioned in the first valve position. The engine exhaust outlet (14) is in fluid communication with the engine air inlet (12) when the valve assembly (16) is positioned in the second valve position. Operational pressure generated by the injector oil pump (18) of the engine assembly (10) is used to move the valve assembly (16) from the first valve position to the second valve position. A method of controlling a flow of engine exhaust in an internal combustion engine (10) is also disclosed.

    • A constant rate exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system (10) for a pressure-charged internal combustion engine (12) is provided. The disclosed exhaust gas recirculation system (10) includes one or more EGR diversion valves (40) each of which is operatively associated with a selected set of combustion chambers for diverting a flow of exhaust gas from the selected combustion chambers via an exhaust gas recirculation conduit (34) to the intake air circuit of the pressure-charged internal combustion engine (12). The disclosed embodiment of the constant rate EGR system (10) also includes a bypass conduit (36) for diverting a flow of intake air to the exhaust manifold (14) and an EGR cooler (38) disposed in operative association with the recirculation conduit (34) and the bypass conduit (36) and adapted for cooling the volume of recirculated exhaust gas in the recirculation conduit (34) while concurrently heating the intake air in the bypass conduit (36).

    • An apparatus is proposed for the open-loop control of the composition of the operating mixture to be introduced into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine. In this apparatus, the dispensing of the aspirated air quantity is effected by means of an aspirated air throttle device, whose displacement complementarily adjusts the cross section of an exhaust gas recirculation line which discharges into the intake system downstream from this throttle device. The opening of the aspirated air throttle device in order to increase the quantity of aspirated air is effected by means of a control pressure delivered to a servomotor, counter to the force of a restoring spring. The control pressure is obtained from the comparison of the actual quantity of aspirated air with the fuel injection quantity. The initial pressure for establishing the control pressure is the supply pressure of a supply pump supplying the fuel metering device. In order to prevent the throttle device for aspirated air from being moved into the closed position during starting of the engine, an additional adjusting device, also actuated by fuel supply pressure, is provided. When supply pressure is absent, this adjusting device moves the aspirated air throttle device into the opening direction counter to the restoring force. At the same time, the outlet opening of the exhaust recirculation line is closed as a result.

    • A regulating device used with the fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine, for regulating the proportions of the operating mixtures of the engine. The regulating device is embodied as a pump which is incorporated into the existing fuel injection system. The pump has a chamber within which a piston is displaceable. This piston is coupled with the fuel rate adjusting member of the fuel injection pump of the fuel injection system, and is displaced in accordance with the adjusted position of the fuel rate adjusting member. The pump is also connected with the throttle plate of the fuel injection system located in the induction tube of the engine. By reason of these connections, rapid adjustment movements of the fuel rate adjusting member can be effectively translated to a proper adjustment of the throttle plate without the delay found in presently known regulating devices.
