    • 1,240,006. Pressure transducers. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. July 22, 1968 [July 22, 1967], No.34808/68. Addition to 1, 186, 200. Heading G1N. [Also in Division F2] A transducer for measuring the pressure in the inlet manifold of an I. C. engine for controlling the fuel injection duration, comprises a moving core for a fixed coil, provided with damping to obviate spurious oscillation. As shown Fig. 2, a circular coil 39 is mounted inside a ring core 38 and associated with a central iron armature 44. The fixed portions 38, 39 are attached to a plate 37: the armature 44 is attached to upper and lower spring plates 45, 47 Fig. 5 (not shown) and biased by spring 56 against two evacuated bellows 58, 59. The interior of the housing is subjected to the inlet manifold pressure whereby the armature 44 is displaced to a position sensed by the coil 39. Movement of the armature is damped by (a) a dashpot comprising a cup 70 attached to the bottom of the armature and having a small clearance with the wall of the housing 30, (b) a thin diaphragm instead of cup 70 separating the two parts 30, 31 of the housing, pierced by a small hole, (c) a friction device comprising a plastics pin 75 Fig. 6 attached to the top of the armature and gripped by a U- shaped spring clip 77 secured to the housing 30, or (d) by coating the spring 56 with a layer of rubber or plastics material.

[Also in Division G1] In an I.C. engine fuel injection system in which a monostable multivibrator is triggered in dependence upon the engine speed and the duration of opening pulses from the multivibrator is dependent upon the pressure in the intake manifold 12, a pressure sensor 41 connected downstream of the butterfly valve 50 is connected momentarily to atmospheric pressure when the butterfly valve is opened to provide an increased injection period during acceleration. As shown, the pressure box 41 is connected to the manifold via a chamber 58 and to atmosphere via orifice 61 which is normally closed by a valve disc 62. Opening of the butterfly valve causes valve disc 62 to lift off its seat, the disc returning to its seat only when the pressure in the chamber 72 of pressure box 68 and chamber 58 are substantially equal.

A pressure-transducer comprises a bellows 58, Fig. 2, subjected to the pressure to be measured, which axially moves a core 44 in a coil 39 having an iron core 38, the movable core 44 being suspended by flat springs 45, 47 (also Fig. 3, not shown). The springs each have a hollow rectangular frame 49 mounted on the core 38, which may be of coiled metal tape with a bore to carry the movable core, and each have inner limbs (48) attached to the movable core 44. The pressure from the inlet manifold of an I.C. engine Fig. 1 (not shown) acts on the bellows 58 via a non- return valve (35, Fig. 4, not shown), and the varying inductance of the coil 39, which may include two windings, controls the pulse width of the output of a multi-vibrator (18) controlling the injection valves of the engine.
