    • A chamber in the interior of a housing communicates with the environment of the housing by means of a gas esxchange path, wherein a filter element with a hydrophobic and/or hydrophobicized, nanoporous material is placed in the gas exchange path. The chamber serves, e.g. to accomodate electronic circuitry, or it is chamed as a reference pressure chamber of a relative pressure sensor. The relative pressure sensor according to the present invention for capturing a measured pressure with respect to a reference pressure comprises a reference pressure path 23 which extends between a surface which can be exposed to the reference pressure and an opening in a reference pressure chamber 22, a filter element 30 which is arranged in the reference pressure path comprising a hydrophobic or hydrophobicized, nanoporous material. The filter element allows pressure compensation on account of its permeability to N2 and O2, while water molecules are selectively blocked. The nanoporous material preferably comprises an inorganic material, in particular Al2O3, TiO2 or SiO2. The nanoporous material is preferably hydrophobic and/or can be impregnated with a hydrophobic layer, preferably a silane, in order to optimize the hydrophobic properties.

    • An adjustable pulley for use in a continuous variable transmission in the power train of a motor vehicle has an axially fixed first conical flange and an axially movable second conical flange. The hydraulic control system which moves the second flange relative to the first flange is provided with at least one first plenum chamber which receives pressurized fluid when the second flange is to move toward the first flange, and with an additional plenum chamber which receives pressurized fluid when the second flange is to move away from the first flange. The admission of pressurized fluid into the additional chamber is regulated in dependency upon the RPM of the flanges. Rapid evacuation of pressurized fluid from the additional chamber can take place by way of a relief valve which opens when the pressure of fluid in the additional chamber rises to a preselected value. This renders it possible to rapidly shift between overdrive and underdrive.

    • A continuously variable speed transmission with two adjustable sheaves and an endless chain trained over the sheaves has a torque transmitting and monitoring unit which is installed between a prime mover, such as the engine of a motor vehicle, and an axially movable flange of one of the sheaves. The monitoring unit has two annular plenum chambers which are sealed from each other while the ratio of the transmission is within a first range, and which communicate with each other when the ratio is within a second range. A check valve between the two chambers can employ a resilient annular seal having a U-shaped cross-sectional outline. A radially outer annular portion of the seal has a lip which normally bears against the internal surface of an annular member of the valve. The seal further comprises an annular radially inner portion, and the radially inner and/or outer portion of the seal can be provided with L-shaped, polygonal and/or otherwise configurated and/or profiled reliefs to further ensure proper operation of the valve.

    • A conical disk assembly including a shaft carrying an axially movable disk and having a fixed disk rigidly connected to the shaft.
