    • A flame retarded polystyrenic resin composition comprising: (A) 100 parts by weight of a resin which comprises (a-1) 1 to 100% by weight of a styrenic polymer having the syndiotactic configuration, (a-2) 0 to 10% by weight of a polymer having compatibility or affinity with component (a-1) and having a polar group, and (a-3) 0 to 99% by weight of a thermoplastic resin and/or a rubbery elastomer other than components (a-1) and (a-2), (B) 2 to 100 parts by weight of a brominated diphenyl compound, (C) 0.5 to 50 parts by weight of at least one compound selected from antimony oxides, sodium antimonate, iron oxides, and zinc oxide, the ratio by weight of component (B) to component (C) being in the range of 1 to 10; a flame retarded polystyrenic resin composition comprising (D) an inorganic filler in addition to the above components; and a molded article of a polystyrenic resin prepared by using the compositions as a material. The flame retarded polystyrenic resin composition has an improved flame retarding property while the proper characteristics of syndiotactic polystyrene such as excellent heat stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength are maintained, realizes suppressed generation of gases and decreased attachment of-materials to molds during heat molding, and exhibits excellent heat stability so that the molded product is provided with little change in color and mechanical strength.

    • A resin composition comprising polystyrene having the syndiotactic configuration (SPS) showing improved heat stability in heat molding at a high temperature is obtained by adding a combination of a phenolic antioxidant and an antioxidant containing phosphorus to SPS. The molded article is obtained by using the resin composition as the material. Additional use of an antioxidant containing sulfur gives more excellent improvement. The composition may further contain another thermoplastic resin and/or rubber elastomer, a polymer exhibiting compatibility with or affinity for SPS and having a polar group, and/or an inorganic filler in accordance with necessity.

    • There are disclosed a thermoplastic resin composition comprising (A) a styrenic polymer having a high degree of syndiotactic configuration, (B) an inorganic filler and (C) a polyphenylene ether that is modified with a compound having an ethylenic double bond and a polar group in the same molecule, especially maleic anhydride, the ether having a modification rate of 1.3% or more by weight; a thermoplastic resin composition further comprising (D) a rubbery elastomer in addition to the above components (A), (B) and (C); a process for producing modified polyphenylene ether (PPO) comprising reacting 100 parts by weight of PPO with 1 to 20 parts by weight of the above compound or a derivative thereof in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of 15 or less parts by weight of a radical generator; and a process for producing the modified PPO comprising reacting 100 parts by weight of PPO with 1 to 5 parts by weight of the above compound or a derivative thereof at 300.degree. to 350.degree. C. in the presence of 0.1 to 3 parts by weight of a radical generator which exhibits a half-life period of 1 minute at 300.degree. C. or higher. The above thermoplastic resin composition is markedly improved in its dynamical properties especially rigidity and heat resistance.

    • There are disclosed a thermoplastic resin composition which comprises a styrenic resin comprising a modified styrenic polymer in which a compound having an unsaturated group and a polar group is bonded to the skeleton of a styrenic polymer having syndiotactic configuration (SPS) or to an end or an intermediate position of a substituent of the SPS, or the mixture of the above modified styrenic polymer and an unmodified SPS; and an inorganic filler, as well as a thermoplastic resin composition which comprises the aforesaid styrenic resin; and an other thermoplastic resin. The compositions are excellent in water resistance, impact resistance, heat resistance, modulus of elasticity and dynamical properties and capable of improving the adhesiveness to the inorganic filler or compatibility with the other resin without impairing the crystallization of the SPS and deteriorating the long-term heat resistant stability of the compositions.
