    • Each of electric cells constituting a battery assembly is provided with external terminals. The upper end of the electric cell is covered with an upper cap surrounding the external terminals whereas the lower end of the electric cell is covered with a lower cap. The electric cell is held between an upper holder and a lower holder via the upper cap and the lower cap. The upper cap includes a protector including ribs projecting along both sides of an inspecting terminal projecting through a terminal opening. The upper ends of the ribs are located above the inspecting terminal. Consequently, a metallic tool or the like cannot be brought into contact with the inspecting terminal, thereby preventing short-circuiting. Thus, it is possible to secure an excellent assembling performance while enhancing the safety of assembling work.

    • In a capacitive physical quantity sensor, a C-V converter converts a variation in a capacitance between a movable electrode and a fixed electrode into a voltage to output the converted voltage in a first operating mode. The C-V converter also outputs a constant voltage in a second operating mode. An amplifier amplifies the converted voltage to output a first voltage, and amplifies the constant voltage to output a second voltage. A first sample and hold circuit operates in the first operating mode to sample and hold the first voltage. A second sample and hold circuit operates in the second operating mode to sample and hold the second voltage. A first differential amplifier obtains a difference voltage between the first voltage held by the first sample and hold circuit and the second voltage held by the second sample and hold circuit.

    • A transaction management system for configurating an on-line shopping system. The on-line shopping system including the transaction management system also includes an IPS-RADIUS server, an account management system operated by a carrier, and an article supplier server. The transaction management system has contract DB storing plural sets of contract information each having a user ID, a customer code, an ISP code, an accounted party code specifying carrier (or account management system), and so on. When a customer buys an article by accessing to an article supplier server, the server transmits an accounting process request containing a customer code to the transaction management system. The transaction management system, when receiving the accounting process request, attempts to authenticate the identity of the customer. If the customer is authenticated, the transaction management system functions so that the carrier collects a fee of the bought article together with a fee charged for the service provided by the carrier.

    • An optical pickup includes a movable unit supported in such a manner that the movable unit can move in tracking directions as well as in focusing directions. The movable unit has a laser unit including an objective lens, a reflecting mechanism, a light source, and a light detecting mechanism all constructed in an integral fashion. An axis of rotation of the movable unit intersects an optical axis of a light beam emitted by the laser unit. Also provided are two rotating mechanisms (for example, pivot pins or hinges) separately disposed in a direction along the axis of rotation, both rotating mechanisms having a common axis of rotation. Such an arrangement makes it possible to realize a small-sized, optical pickup having a driving mechanism suitable for high speed seeking. Such an optical pickup makes it possible to realize an optical recording/reproducing apparatus that can transfer data at a high rate of speed over a short access time.
