    • A method to determine the load balancing a router should use on its outgoing links for traffic to each destination. It is based on link loads. Link weights and lengths of the shortest paths as calculated by ordinary IP routing protocols are only used to determine the allowed routing alternatives. To decide the load sharing on the outgoing links for traffic to a certain destination t, a router uses bottleneck load values for each of the alternative routes. Bottleneck loads are calculated through a special protocol starting from each destination t, such that they represent the maximal link load along a path and an average value of the maximal link loads in case that a path is split up in more than one. The load sharing parameters are then updated by use of the calculated bottleneck load values in order to level out the bottleneck loads.

    • A method to determine the load sharing a router should use on its outgoing links for traffic to each destination. The expression also depends on a parameter α between 0 and 1 such that a lower value will allow more alternative paths. The load sharing applied by router n is then to share the traffic for destination t on the outgoing links in proportion to the calculated values.
